Wheel Corrosion
Hi Guys,
I have just checked my tyre pressures and noticed this.. They have been powder coated 2 years ago and ceramic coated straight away. What would cause this as do not want to have them done every 2 years if i get them referbed again.. They have never been to a car wash and always washed by myself with ph neutral car shampoo. Many Thanks Gus |

I generally associate damage in that area with wheel balancing machines/careless operators.
Most tyre fitters just chuck the wheel on the balancing machine spindle and clatter the centre bore across the thread that locks the wheel in place. This damages the finish and allows the damp in. |

I think it is caused by the centre caps moving about (vibrating mostly) so causing the lacquer to crack. Once the lacquer's gone, it's a one way ticket with British roads and weather.
It's also where the nice polished alloy meets the rough cast, so is difficult to get good adhesion of any paint. Could be a mixture of all three suggestions. |

Is that a chrome-ish powder coat? If so it looks like the clear coat has become damaged, probably by the balancers, and the clear is separating from the colour coat below. You might be able to arrest the spread with careful application of clear lacquer from a paint pen around the edge where it's peeled to.

Is it still on the original tyres/weights from when they were done? I'd perhaps have a word with the refurb company if so and just see if they could do a discounted re-do (after two years I'd suggest any talk of a warranty repair would be futile, and unreasonable).
Get one of the needle tipped lacquer pens from Halfords or eBay and touch it in. It won't be perfect but it'll stop it getting worse, hopefully, as it's not going to corrode underneath like a cleared diamond cut wheel would. |
