Manual 335i vs. Step
I know everyone askes whether the Automatic transmision owners regret thier decision, but i was just wondering if there was anyone with a manual who would get the auto with the paddle shifters if they could choose again.

Truthfully... I almost wish I got the step. The clutch in the 335 is a POS. Its already slipping on me when I try to put the power down. I think with a decent clutch/SSK it will be much better but until then the step will win out. Also from what I hear it has a better gearing ratio.

3er isn't a sports car, but I agree it's much better with a stick unless you live in LA or NYC where you're in constant traffic.

I was really tempted to get a manual with my 335i, but I think I'll have more fun with the steptronic and paddles. I've only driven a manual once in my life, and I was pretty good with it on my brother's old supercharged Nissan Z (didn't stall once), but I'd be worried I'd blow out the engine.

I have been driving stick for 9 years. My knee went bad last summer, mainly from over use of the clutch. This is from all the rediculous traffic here in Miami,FL.
Love stick and I think its more fun. You definetly feel more in control of your car but with todays automatics the gap between the two is becoming closer. My car shifts fast and is smooth and you ever have to worry about miss shifting and with the increase in traffic in all citys, I have to say that im happer w/ Automatics+Paddles. Sometimes I miss stick. I guess the best thing is too have two cars. Auto for everyday and a stick for fun. My knee is feeling so much better now! lol |

I drove both...
My first BMW was a 97 M3.. manual of course and I loved it. My latest is a 335i sedan, sports package and it does indeed have the Step with the paddle shifters. I found that especially at higher speeds the Step in manual mode shifts faster than I can do it with a Manual.. and I am no slouch in that area.
Hemlock P.S. Now if I just had my car back from the shop... 1 Week so far waiting for high pressure fuel pump. |

If I had to do it over again I could be happy with the step. Ive had manual cars for the past 14 yrs and at this point in my DD I wouldnt mind being lazy. I still have my garaged M3 thats a stick and my bike if I need to go out and have fun. Sure Im enjoying the 335 in stick but its just not the type of car that likes to be run hard, shifting fast through the gears. Its more of a lazy shifting car. Very comfortable and smooth, but not a race car.

The benefits of the auto, i.e., traffic jams, eating while holding a cell phone, etc. simply are meaningless when you have a manual and rip it down into 3rd, go back in the seat, and let them gasp as they see your tail lights trail off into the night.

the manual makes the car feel faster because of how it handles the torq compared to the Auto.
auto removes the driver error, which can make the car faster than a manual. |

1. Who were you referring to seeing your tail lights off into the night? 2. Where in NC do you live? Love that place, Wilmington is great! |
