BMW at IAA Munich Mobility Conference September 2023

Guys I have some information to share from upcoming IAA Munich conference in Sept.

The purpose of this thread is to collect more information on BMW future products and technology presented at this conference. The impact of this will be felt across many product lines.

BMW presents several world premieres at IAA MOBILITY

Quote:
World premiere of BMW Vision New Class and BMWi7 Protection at the IAA Summit
Right at the start of IAA MOBILITY on September 5, the new BMW Vision New Class will celebrate its world premiere in Hall A2 at the IAA Summit, and will later also be on display in the IAA Open Space. In the future, the New Class will combine innovations in the fields of electrification, digitalization and circularity, and will be distinguished above all by its design, operating concept, efficiency and sustainability.

The BMW i7 Protection will also be unveiled at the IAA Summit. The vehicle is the world's first certified all-electric special protection sedan with a self-supporting body structure made of armored steel. Armor plating on the underbody and roof, as well as armored windows, are designed to protect vulnerable individuals from firearm or explosive attack.

World premieres of the all-electric MINI Cooper and MINI Countryman at the IAA Open Space
BMW's MINI brand is also presenting new world premieres at IAA MOBILITY. The new all-electric MINI Cooper and the new all-electric MINI Countryman will be on display in the IAA Open Space. An all-electric model innovation will also be the focus of BMW Motorrad's presentation at Max-Joseph-Platz in the IAA Open Space. The BMW CE 02 will also be shown here as an e-polo.

All other new models of all BMW brands with electrified drive systems, digital innovations and resource-saving production will also be presented in the IAA Open Space, including the hybrid models of the new BMW 5 Series, the BMW iX1, the BMW i4, the BMW i5, the BMW iX and the BMW i7.

Also on display at IAA MOBILITY: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.
One of the key topics for BMW at IAA MOBILITY is the use of hydrogen as an energy source for current and future vehicles. For example, BMW is currently developing and testing a Sports Activity Vehicle with a hydrogen fuel cell drive. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen will be presented at IAA MOBILITY. Its two 700 bar carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) tanks can hold 6 kilograms of gaseous hydrogen, which can be refueled within three to four minutes. In the fuel cell system, this triggers a chemical reaction between the hydrogen and the oxygen in the ambient air, which is used to generate electricity for the electric motor.

BMW i Vision Dee – The merger of real world and virtual reality

Quote:
“Mixed reality slider” is the name of the central and only control panel in the otherwise Spartan cockpit of the i Vision DEE. With it, you can find the perfect mixture of real and virtual world. Depending on how far you move your finger over the slider, the head-up display in the wind shield shows either classic information about the ride or displays content from the digital communication channels of the riders as well as social media content. If all that is too little for you, you can also immerse yourself in colorful virtual worlds. On the highest level – level 5, the road is the only real thing. Additionally, the real world can be gradually faded out; the windows are dimmed for this purpose. Apart from the virtual reality functions, the voice assistant is supposed to be used to interact with the i Vision DEE.

Last year, BMW surprised its audience with the black-white color-changing technology. Now, however, the e-ink foils have been further developed in such a way that the i Vision DEE becomes a chameleon, so to speak. 32 different colors can be displayed: in patterns, as a gradient or only one specific color.

When you approach the i Vision DEE, you are greeted with an individual avatar and your name on the side window. In addition, the door opens magically. This is intended to convey a feeling of coming home and, in a sense, of being appreciated by the car. Altogether, BMW has brought the topic of emotion very much to the front, demonstrating once again that the topic of mobility, and in particular the topic of driving a car, is emotional and that humans are also emotional beings. This fits in with the topic of this year's IAA MOBILITY 2023, where the motto "Experience Connected Mobility" is about making modern and future mobility tangible and not just exhibiting the latest trends.

If BMW has its way when it comes to innovations, the i Vision Dee also demonstrates two other important aspects: namely sustainability and a strong improvement in electromobility. In future, 100 percent of the vehicles will be made of recycled materials and can be fully recycled once again. The i Vision Dee is showcasing BMW's "Neue Klasse" which is going to be introduced in 2025. Here, new round-cell batteries are going to be used, which, in contrast to conventional lithium-ion batteries, offer a 20 percent increase in energy density and require fewer raw materials. Solid-state batteries are then to come for the first time in 2030.

BMW presents a revolutionary battery for electric vehicles: The game changer in electromobility?

Quote:
ne of the great features of BMW's new battery is its enormous energy density of up to 1,200 watt-hours per liter. This impressive figure represents a significant advance over the batteries currently in use, which have around 700 watt-hours per liter. The higher energy density will allow electric cars to travel farther without recharging, greatly improving the driving experience and reducing the need for frequent refueling stops. In addition, these new types of batteries can be recharged very quickly. Charging up to 100 kilometers in just ten minutes means that electric car owners can be much more flexible and comfortable with their vehicles. This should finally make range anxiety a thing of the past. In addition to its higher energy density and fast charging capability, the new BMW battery is also said to have a longer service life than conventional lithium-ion batteries, which will also help to slow down the depreciation of electric vehicles and increase the long-term profitability of electric cars.

The "Neue Klasse": A new generation of electric vehicles
BMW plans to use the new solid-state battery in the “Neue Klasse”, which will be launched in 2025. The Neue Klasse represents a new generation of electric vehicles that will set new standards in terms of digitalization and electrification. As the premium manufacturer emphasizes, this vehicle series will carry the characteristics of a typical BMW into the future and further accelerate the rapidly growing demand for fully electric vehicles from the BMW Group. The iVision DEE, which was unveiled at the beginning of the year, provides a small foretaste.

The new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, will be the starting point for this new generation of electric vehicles. This plant will exclusively produce vehicles based on the "Neue Klasse" platform, underlining the importance of this vehicle series for the future strategy of BMW. Overall, BMW's groundbreaking battery and the launch of the Neue Klasse from 2025 show that the company is firmly committed to advancing electromobility and offering its customers a compelling and future-oriented alternative to conventional combustion engines.

BMW receives exemption for Highway Assistant

Quote:
BMW has made a remarkable achievement in the field of autonomous driving. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority has granted the German automaker an exemption for an innovative highway assistant in Germany. This semi-autonomous system allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel at speeds up to 80 mph while the system takes over. BMW's Autobahn Assistant will initially be integrated into the 5 Series model, where it will take over the steering wheel in addition to controlling distance and speed, up to the posted speed if desired. In the USA and Canada, it is already in use in the large BMW 7 Series.

Safety and monitoring
The system offers a high degree of user-friendliness and safety. A special display in the cockpit informs the driver when the Highway Assistant is activated. Once activated, the driver can take his hands off the wheel for longer periods of time, as long as he keeps a close eye on the traffic situation and is ready to take control at any time. An intelligent camera constantly monitors the driver's attention.

Active Lane Change Assist: A new level of autonomy
In addition, Active Lane Change Assist offers the option of changing lanes automatically between speeds of 60 km/h and 180 km/h, without the driver having to intervene with the steering wheel. If the traffic situation permits, the system performs the necessary steering maneuvers and speed adjustments on its own. Another feature is the ability to initiate a lane change by simply confirming the driver's gaze in the exterior mirror, without the need for a turn signal.

The technology behind the system
This significant advance in semi-autonomous technology was made possible by a novel software stack, a powerful computing platform and a connection to the BMW Cloud via 5G. In addition, the system uses 360° sensing technology that includes cameras, ultrasonic and radar sensors. A live HD map with precise route trajectories is also continuously synchronized with GPS. This makes BMW the first automaker in Germany to offer a system for semi-automated highway driving at speeds between 60 and 130 km/h.

BMW will also be present at the IAA MOBILITY in Munich. There, the automaker plans to present steps and details of the "New Class".
