Requesting advice on BMW warranty
Hi guys, I am requesting some advice from the experienced bmw owners on this forum.
I bought my 2015 435i M back in Dec 2019. Bought at 30k Miles from a leased owner and its been fantastic no issues at all. The car now in 2021 is at 37k miles. (Just fyi) I purchased extended warranty but then I was new and didn't know all the different types of warranties available. So just today I looked at my car profile and saw my: 1. New Vehicle Limited Warranty 2. BMW ultimate Care+ Both expired back in November. I've heard getting warranty in general is a rip off and warranty companies are just there to rob you, but I just want to look at the options of what potential warranty makes the most sense? With that being said can you guys help me out with this one? Appreciate it a ton. |

Are you planning to keep the car for a few years and add another 80K+ miles?
If yes and you are a member of a credit union, you can get mechanical breakdown protection policy at a better price. It all depends on how long you plan to keep the car, vehicle maintenance history, and personal risk tolerance. |

The vast majority of buyers of extended warranties, be it from the manufacturer or third party, never have enough repairs done to recoup the cost of the coverage. Yes, you may have a catastrophic failure, but you'd be the exception. Warranty companies are in business to make a profit, so they know the odds of a problem occurring and price the policies accordingly. You're betting you'll have a major problem, they're betting you won't, and just like in Vegas the house always wins.

When I had my 320d I didn’t bother with the BMW extended warranty, I just ran it without cover for the last 2 years of ownership, after all it was a tried and trusted setup with a reliable engine and decent build quality.
The 330e I now have still has a reliable engine and the same decent build quality, however there are some rather expensive hybrid drivetrain additions which have been known to cause issues, in or out of warranty. I have the financial cushion to deal with some unplanned issues out of warranty, but not to the extent of most of the hybrid drivetrain - even the invertor/converter (AC-DC) charging unit is over £3000, let alone the electric motor and drivetrain. So for my circumstances, £50 per month for relative peace of mind is definitely worth it. |

I'd say it's also important to consider your mechanical knowledge and abilities as well. If you are someone who can do small fixes on your car and keep up the regular maintenance at home it probably isn't worth it. Catastrophic failure is very rare on properly maintained cars.
My dealer offered me 40k/4yr for around $4200. I turned it down because I know I could do most of the wear and tear items like suspension and control arms myself so it really didn't make financial sense to me. That being said it's also about piece of mind. If you have the money and don't want the worry than spend it. It's just money, we can't take it with us when we go lol.

As everyone said, catastrophic failures are not common but WILL happen to a few. Insurance is for your peace of mind . At 37K I think your car still has enough life left in it (with proper maintenance), and you shouldn't need extended warranty unless you plan on keeping it for a really long time, and put quite some miles on it.

You should of seen how thirsty the person was at the warranty company she literally tried all pressure tactics to get me to purchase a warranty package. Is there a basic warranty that a bmw owner should always have just for minor things to save money? |

much appreciate the advice. its how I feel too. I feel I might need new front rotors because even after getting new brake pads I still get that annoying squeeks every now and then. Maybe after I watch the brakes thoroughly that might make the difference.

That's because they can make as much profit on that policy as they do on the sale of the car. When I picked up mine the F&I manager tried to sell me tire and wheel damage insurance for $3k. To make his point he had a bent rim in his office. It didn't sway me, because I'd done my research. Most of the time pothole damage comes from the combination of big rims and very low profile tires. Rubber and air absorb shock, aluminum doesn't. Knowing that I had made sure to get a car with 17s. Sure enough, when I looked at the bent rim in his office it was a 20.

Repost of something I wrote in another forum:
Generally speaking, there are two types of warranties (officially Mechanical Breakdown Insurance, MBI):
For you to make an informed decision, you need to get a blank sample of the service contract. This has all the fine print. Look out for what's not covered and any weird contract language. For example, Portfolio Protection requires you to bring the car back to the selling dealer for any warranty work if you are within a certain distance of the selling dealer. Since these warranties are really insurance policies, they have deductibles for each claim you make. And probably like auto insurance, 3rd party MBI claims can be a nightmare. Sadly, the person selling you the MBI may not know if the 3rd party MBI servicer is difficult on claims. Typically, 3rd party MBIs are cheaper, but more difficult to get claims approved. I had one once on my Jetta TDI and the warranty more than paid for itself in A/C system repairs, but the adjuster wanted the dealer to use UV leak detection dye in the system to confirm a leak in the radiator. It's just an example of the hoops you and the dealer will need to navigate to get claims through. When I was shopping around for warranties for my F31, I looked at all of the above and ended up going with the BMW ESC. You should be able to buy it anytime before your factory warranty expires, but the price also goes up as the car gets older. For comparison, when my car was 3.5 years old I bought the BMW Platinum CPO ESC covering 84mos/unlimited miles from original in-service date, cost was $3900.

My last BMW an 06 wagon ended up using every penny and more that I paid for the warranty. Since I keep my cars for 10 years and my last experience I went with my dealers CNA extended warranty for six more years and 90K miles taking in my 8K or so miles a year. I was able to customize the years and mileage. the CNA warranty tends to fly under the radar and only sold through the dealer.

Does anyone have any idea of the actual costs for the OEM warranties (yes I know there are many different flavors and lengths, etc)? Is there a dealer in this forum that offers good deals on them? (That was the case for a Toyota I had years ago.). I am (I think) about to upgrade for 2013 E93 to a 2018 F33, and I think I will simply sleep better if I have coverage past the end of the warranty. Everything is so expensive on BMW's...

I'm starting to realize that you need to do some leg work to come out ahead on these warranties. I paid $1600 to CPO my lease and get a +1 year warranty, then another $3900 to extend my CPO warranty to the max. In the last month alone, I had a lot of work done covered by CPO and the cost of the parts alone was well over $3700. Add in dealer labor and you could be looking at a equivalent bill of $5-6K to replace a valve cover, coolant tank, and steering rack. In my case, I was very eagled-eye about my car. Each month I'd inspect the car and would find stuff. These were issues that didnt necessarily produce any driveability symptoms or impair the core functions of the car, but were covered by the warranty regardless. The way I see it, it's proactive repairs that might not make a difference now, but will pay off in the future. Since that same part is less likely to fail out of warranty.

zurich extended warranty
Gentlemen,
I need your advice. I just bought a 2019 bmw m5 it has 8,700. miles. The car is immaculate and everything is 100%. The original warranty ends 7-11-23. I wanted to get an extended warranty so I called BMW dealer. He promised me an extended BMW platinum coverage policy that would be for 84 months from today so I would have coverage until 7/20/2030. So I signed up at a cost of $ 5,700.00 when I got home and looked closer at the extended warranty it showed the expiration of policy at 7/2026. So that's just a 3yr. extension. I called and was told that BMW just stopped this type of coverage july 1st. which is today, but he could give me the exact same BMW coverage from a third party ins. (Zurich ins.) at a cost of 4,800.00.It would give me the full 7yr. ending in 7/2030 So now I do not know if I should buy it or forget the whole extended warranty idea. Please let me know what you think and if any have ever used Zurich ins.... Thanks |
