M4 Pricing relative to M2 - finance not lease
Hey guys. Quick couple questions for you. People on other parts of the board have been trying to draw parallels between paying sticker price for an M2 or negotiated price for an M3/4. Without going nuts over it, I just wanted to ask a couple questions.
I am pretty sure that the only way the cost is even close is apples vs oranges (M2 buy vs M4 lease) because BMW subsidizes the leases so heavily. Since I'm not really interested in leasing... Anyway. Worth a look. thanks for your input. |

You can probably get 9-10% off an ED M4 build from a high volume dealer. If comparing buy vs buy its very simple obviously....price of one versus price of the other. You aren't buying an M4 for the price of an M2 even if you buy a stripper M4 but you could get close assuming you don't want any options.
A total stripper M4 has an MSRP of $67195...probably could buy ED for $61000 or maybe a little lower A stripper M2 is $52695 so $8305 difference. Assuming 0.9 financing you are looking at $118 per month over 72 months more for the M4 on a buy versus buy. Every $1000 more tacked on adds $14.27 per month for 72 months. |

I'm actually in the same boat as I deliberate between going the M2 or M3 route. In thinking it though I'm leaning heavily towards an M3. From a monetary standpoint, there is going to be a price gap between the two cars that favors the M2.
With that said, my current thinking is predicated on two assumptions. 1) I'm not sure I can readily get an M2 without markup over MSRP in my market and there is generally a waiting list that would put me well beyond my window for my next car 2) The M2 is not supposed to be a limited run a la the 1M and there is speculation that there may be other M2 variants in the pipeline. These factors would lead me to say that the M2 would likely follow a depreciation schedule that mirrors an M3 at best. If that is true, then a substantial portion of the price difference could be recouped at resale (this ignores NPV) The second point is speculative as I do not own a crystal ball. For all I know the M2 could be the second coming of the 3.0 CSL... However, if I believe my assumption is correct, then the gap at the end of ownership is not as large. To me, the price difference is worth it for all the extra toys, a more readily available car, and the interior feeling less like my current m235, but this may not be true for you. Hope this helps in some way!

Go to your dealer and sit in an M4 with Full leather dash...then stop by the lot and hop in any bargain basement 228i with Dakota leather/Nav MT and that's pretty much the same as an M2 inside.

That sounds about right. I didn't even look at what rate was available on the M2 to be honest. I was using the same .9 rate for both. That being said the M4 looks even better.

Main thing here is the M2 and M4 are two different classes of vehicles. Different size. You get a lot more features on the M4 than the M2 like nicer leather, carbon fiber roof/trunk, M style mirrors, adjustable suspension, throttle, and steering. To me the M2 is somewhere between the m235i and a true M car since it is lacking features found in other M cars.
Most of the time you can always finance through a credit union and get a better rate. With BMW it seems the best deals happen around December. Maybe the M2 will get 0.9% but I doubt it will until it's been out a few years. Personally, I'd never pay full price for anything and I would wait for all the hype to die down or buy in the middle of winter. 1-2k over invoice is all I'd ever pay and there are reasonable dealers out there that will gladly accept that eventually. It really comes down to what you want to spend and your goals. If the M2 wasn't going to be my daily driver and had more features that other m cars have, it would be an easier sell to me.
