So I’ve been interested in getting a e90 for a while n was looking to mod n daily drive it.
I came across this. It’s pretty cheap compared to others I’ve seen but the miles are high than what I’d prefer tbh.

On the other hand, there’s this M3 E36 that’s been sitting in my apartment complex for over a year now. I used to see the guy who owned it when I first moved in but I guess he moved out or something. I’ve seen him start it n it runs or at least used to. But I was thinking about trying to get in contact with him to see if I could buy it off him n have it as a project car or something. Some pics of it are attached.

So, my question is basically would you go for the 335 or just get some cheap daily driver and get the E36 as a project car?

isshh a old pre-lci 335, high mileage and non desirable options. Only sport pack at least, but beige and over all this automatic..

Any maintenance list?

High chance it would need love mechanically, but you can tell it needs love aesthetically.


Depends of you budget, even a 335 with a lot of maintenance records and in great shape will cost you more maintenance than you'll want.

E36 is a classic. I dont like the look of the E36, but this is my opinion. I would get a better daily and found a real project car just like this E36. The smile per gallon wont only be on the road, but also when you'll wrench on the car.


Im looking for E chassis car every day, and cheap 335 are not rare. When people understand the car need turbos, injectors, seals, fuel pump, vacuum line and a clutch, and the repair cost is more than the car value, they will list it for dirt cheap.

That 335 is going to cost you more in the longrun than a well maintained one. IMO a 335i is a more enjoyable car to own for daily duties than an e36 M3 but I'd look for a clean one with service records. Miles don't mean as much as the life it's lived IMO. $10-12k should get you a nice turnkey one depending on what your non-negotiables are.

Edit: That's not to say a potentially dirt cheap e36 wouldn't interest me. I'd certainly try to reach out to the owner if you have the time on your hands that it will take to restore it. I would pass on that 335 though.

I'd rather have a 335i myself...my cousin sold his E36 M3 in 2008 for $4000 and he refused to sell it to me. He said at this price it needs a lot of work. And that was what 16 years ago...

Just based on how that thing looks to be kept I would not touch it. If you have to really give it a good look over and don't excuse rust, leaks, and overall bad condition. It will all cost you dearly to get fixed right. To do it yourself at least half an arm considering the specimen, maybe a bit of your leg if it is hungry for parts. Tread cautiously.

I would look elsewhere. Unless you can get a hold of maintenance records for either one, I would pass.
