QUESTION: Wheel inner barrel sizing + offset
Do all wheels of a particular size (i.e. 17" wheel) have the exact same inner barrel diameter? Or are there differences depending on style?
Reason I am asking has to do with clearance.... I know some 17" wheels fit 335i brakes, and some don't. I am wondering if it is only because some styles have spoke designs that don't clear the brakes, or could it also be that the inner barrel diameters of some are larger, allowing for brake clearance, whereas other smaller ones do not? THANKS IN ADVANCE ! Last edited by scott135i; 12-18-2011 at 11:37 AM.. |

the barrells are different sizes for sure!
I have to run spacers on my 17" winters or else the barell rubs on my calipers

Barrel sizing definitely varies depending on the manufacturer and style of wheel, so you may encounter some wheels that do not clear.

In my experience, I learned the hard way that 2008 328xi OEMs do NOT fit on my 2009 335d. They hit the calibers and would not go on. Spent an extra hour at the dealer while they took tires off, remounted/balanced, then put them back on the car for winter. Would be very interested to know the spacer size that might make it work.

Looking at brake part numbers, 335d and 335i has the same brakes, so as long as the 328xi wheels wasn't 16", I find it weird that those didn't fit.
