Coding required for F31 Harman Kardon Amp replacement?

Having lost all audio in my 2015 F31 320i Touring, I've had confirmation that it's not economically repairable.

The exact model B104 (6512 9 366 164) does pop-up on eBay now and then, but I'm unclear if the model number is identical, whether a replacement would additionally require coding and/or programming? And, apologies for the newbie question, is this to fundamentally allow it to turn on at all, i.e. could I manage without it?

If coding/programming is required, any recommendations of places that could perform this for me, would be really welcome (I'm in Surrey, UK).

Thanks,

Richard.

The H-K amp does require programming/encoding with ISTA/P. Unless you found one with a very low price I'd replace it with a Match UP 10DSP.

Try a company called mak coding - website www.makcoding.co.uk

I have not used the personally but they have had good reviews on other forums

I had a similar situation. I bought one used unit but found the connections were incompatible. I jury rigged it and got sound but the display never worked. So, I returned it then got another one with the right connections.

That one worked fine but the language was in Cryllic. With a translator app I was able to get to the language settings but found English UK unresponsive.

I played around in the language setting with Esys but the coding would always error out on execution. However, French was an available language option and I'm functional in that.

Otherwise the stereo works fine, CD, radio, info, settings and display work like factory only it just displays everything in French.

I'll +1 this. I replaced mine with a Helix DSP, Morel Components and added a sub in the rear.

Thanks for reply, that's interesting the language changed, as assumed that comes from the head-unit, not the amplifier? Although the language was wrong, was it 'plug and play' putting the replaced unit in, or was some coding required?

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually looking to sell the car, so want the *cheapest* way to get the sound functioning again - and actually not fussed on the audio quality (sorry!).

So, just trying to work out the potential costs for coding (and if it's required), so I add that to a second-hand unit on eBay (about £600). A replacement from BMW direct is about £1400. I sense the third-party amps, which are no doubt way better, are a higher pricepoint, and will require some specialist installation?

It was plug and play. I think the head unit was probably from Eastern Europe originally and English wasn't active in the EntryNav. I activated English but couldn't get Esys to successfully code it to the car. Other than "Dans Francais" it does everything else, even indicates "Faible pression des pneus" on cold days.

Tres bien. So was it the head unit you were replacing or the separate HK amp? And 'plug and play' from a hardware perspective, but it still needs coding (or were you just using Esys to try to change the language?) Sounds like I may need a lot of pointers into the world of DIY coding...?

No issues with the amp, it was just the head unit, specifically so I could check the oil, tire pressures and listen to music.

I replaced it with an L7 Nav but not all the language options were available. I was directed to try and use Esys to activate English as a language option, but the coding wouldn't take.

Ah, OK. For me, it's the HK Amp (in the boot/trunk) which is broken, head unit is assumed to be fine. Still not 100% sure the standalone amp needs coding if parts number is matching!

It does. Most major electrical parts in a BMW must be programmed to work. It's why BMW isn't a popular car amongst thieves, the parts are too difficult to sell.

OK, thanks for confirming. Sounds like if I do source a replacement unit, even with the same part number, there's going to be an additional cost in getting someone to correctly code it for my vehicle then.

Can someone share what the typical cost of coding from BMW is and then an independent?

I just replaced my Harmon Kardon amplifier from my 2015 F15 X5 but it's still not working so I hope it's just because of coding.

It’s almost certainly going to be coding.

Not sure on cost but someone here might be able to do it for you remotely. It’s pretty much a 5 minute job so hopefully someone can suggest some contacts. I think kubax86 might be able to help.

Interesting. Never would have assumed a amp needs coding. What needs to be done in terms of coding then?

I am looking to replace on my X1 HiFi with HK amp soon (they are the same connector on lower series car(both 7 channel) which I sourced cheaply. So I better be clear over what needs to be done. Do I need to flash the AMP?

Hi everyone. My amp broken on my 116d and I replaced with one with the same part number used.
I injected cafd but coding failed on cdeploy.
Does it need flashed? I thought only coding could do.
I didn’t try yet to flash it with esys, but that should work, right?
Any importance if my psdzdata is way newer than what the car has or if it has any ither dependencies that must be updated as well.

Thank you

Make sure FA is correct, and use read svt (ECU), then try again
