PS fluid flush using Turkey Baster

I flushed my PS fluid using turkey baster method. For anyone interested at the effectiveness, I flushed the reservoir 6 times, using just short of 2L of new CHF-11S. The original fluid I got out at 78k miles is brown, while brand new CHF-11S is green.

The pic shows samples of fluid I got out each time, in counter-clockwise order. I dipped a bit more on the last one thus it seems darker.

I did mine three times at 32K and it basically turned out the way yours did.
Almost one flush per 10K is what I'm thinking based on your results and mine.

Easy to do also.

Excellent analysis, and fantastic visual! I really like this post. Good job! Hard data is the best thing to provide on this forum.

I did mine at 50k for the only reason of "I've got nothing going on today, and I don't feel like jacking the car up to do (insert excuse for working on car to kill time here)." So I decided to do PS fluid. I did the same method you did. CH-11S is hard to come by locally. Better deals are online.

I don't feel or hear any difference, but it's nice knowing that fresh fluid is circulating through the steering system. If anything, the worst case scenario is that I spent $20 one day, and had a good time working on my car. That's an investment in my own happiness above all else.

In my case, the steering is noticeably smoother, and offers crispier feedback it seems. On top of the fact that the old fluid just looks and smells as if it was eating the steering system, definitely a cheap insurance.

i just unhook the return hose coming back to the reservoir and place it into a container. you will need to cover the hole on the reservoir the hose came off.

have a friend start the car for a few seconds, let it suck fluid from the reservoir, keep it topped up with new fluid.

it will circulate thru the steering rack and shoot back out the return hose into your catch container.

Just make sure to check the cap of your PS reservoir for type to be used (either CHS or ATF) - don't mix types

That seems easy and more thorough. Do you have to turn the wheel back and forth too? Did you write up a DIY for this method?

i didn't turn the wheel back and forth but it seems like it would be a good idea. you would have to do it fast though, it cycles thru the fluid pretty quick.

i didn't do a diy write-up, i did see a good diy awhile back though that had the location of the drain plug for the steering rack, you drain it down low and refill from up top.

I need to think through on how to avoid getting fluid everywhere in the engine bay. Other than that, is there any difference in effect between your method and the benjo bolt method by that DIY? I can't think of any. I did turkey baster mainly to avoid getting under the car.

With your method, I think one might as well get a new reservoir for a new filter. Then it is probably the closest one can get to having the entire PS system flushed. Probably will do this next time, as I estimate I get only 80% fluid new now, and the filter in the reservoir doesn't look good.

This is completely off topic, but I saw Turkey Baster in the title and immediately thought/chuckled about the story my wife (Dr.) told me involving one of her patients trying to get pregnant........

The P/S reservoirs have built in filters, so if you want to change it's filter than buy a new reservoir. I do a vacuum and refill every oil change, just found a better tool than a turkey baster to do it with

Something like this?

It's what I use for the power steering and rear differential.

Cleaned in between of course....

The transfer pump! Also good for filling transmissions... The best part is that you can get all of the P/S fluid in one clean pump.
