Broken off hose

Hello,

I have 2015 428xi Gran Coupe. Today I changed air filter for the first time by myself (previously dealers/indy shops have done it). Once I was done with it, I've noticed that there is disconnected hose coming out of the engine. Then I found where it's supposed to be connected to (see pictures attached; forgive the dust there).

I don't know if I broke it or it's been like that for a while so I have a couple of questions:

1. What that hose is for and is this something I can repair/replace myself? If so, what's the # of the part I need to replace?

2. Is it safe to start a car and drive it around?

I tried googling for the part and found a few pictures similar to mine (based on the 70519624 number next to it) but struggling to figure out exactly what it is.

Thank you!!

Frantic googling suggests that this is a vacuum line off the airbox. Does the broken nipple part come off or is it part of the airbox?

I recall seeing that before, and that it's part of the air box. You might be able to join the two pieces together with a piece of brass tube that fits inside them. You can get that at a hobby store where they sell radio control planes, they use them as fuel lines.

Thank you, Billfitz! Found this thread:

Going to attempt that fix in a couple of days. Still wondering what that line does though

If you do as that thread suggests you may have problems. Superglue can dissolve some plastics, epoxy doesn't stick to all plastics. I'd use tubing inside the original nipple, then I'd reinforce it with UV glue. I believe it's part of the PCV system.
