Using different rear and front tires.
Hello, I'm new to e90post. I hope someone can advise me about changing my RFT tires:
I need to gt rid of the run flat tires because they are really uncomfortable. (Continental SportContact 2 SSR very bad tires). So as i was doing some research i found that the best tire that would suite me would be BridgestonePotenza RE970AS Pole Position. I found no matching pair for the rear wheels. I need 255/40-17. So I thought about putting a pair of Continental ExtremeContact DWS on the rear wheels ( they are good in snow )and a pair of Bridgestone on the front wheels ( they have pretty good handling and cornering capability). I believe by doing so i would improve cornering( front wheels ) and snow traction ( rear wheel ) and these tires will match the car recommended sizes. What do you think of my choice? Thank you in advance, |

Put Continental ExtremeContact DWS all the way around there great tires and they last. Ive got 40K miles on mine and the rears are just starting to show wear and the fronts still look almost new.

It's generally a poor idea to have different tires on the same car due to unexpected handling responses, especially in emergency situations.
After about 11,000 miles, the DWS tires mounted on my ZSP 128i have provided excellent handling, ride and tread wear. The only downside is a slightly mushy steering feel on initial turn-in, but the grip is unaffected. Increasing the pressures by about 3 psi help the steering feedback without degrading the ride quality. Tom |

I agree with the DWS. Dry handling just as good at the RFTs if not better and superior wet and snow traction. Not your average all seasons I must say. Been running them for about 10k miles with little wear so far.

I run different tires up front. Although it is not ideal, it will work just fine. I tracked my car with this setup and did not have any problems under hard deceleration, cornering, or acceleration. It works fine as daily driver as well...

ant13ant, based on your country's climate, I would consider a high-performance summer tire like the Michelin Pilot Super Sport or Continental ContiSportContact (2 or 3).
As well, if you use a 'staggered' set-up (different size front and rear sets of tires), you should make sure that the overall diameter remains the same for both tires, so you should have something like 225/45-17 front to go with the 255/40-17 rear. When you get the new tires mounted, invest in a good 4-wheel alignment -- that will make the tires last as long as possible by resetting the suspension to factory specifications. Many of us have replaced the original RFTs with non-RFT tires and have been quite happy with the results, particularly as non-RFTs tend to 'hop' less over uneven pavement. Regards D.
