I was on my way to Dallas this week when I stopped for fuel when my credit card was declined at two petrol stations. This was followed by an email by my bank to call them in regards to a fraud alert. I call them and check my online statement:
1) attempt made to buy EasyJet tickets (successful, but bank already refunded) out of the UK 2) attempt made to buy something from Groupon out of Johannesburg, South Africa 3) attempt made to buy airplane tickets on Air Canade out of Canada This was all on the same day, and all online of course. |

Having my credit card hacked would be a blessing. I got a call from the IRS saying that they received my return twice and my refund has already been issued.
Good times ahead! |

They're never difficult when it comes to fraud claims either. The conversation is always - Me: "Hi there I think my credit card number was compromised I didn't charge x, y, and z. BoA rep: "I'm sorry to hear that we'll take care of that right away at no charge" It's always a no-nonsense, hassle-free conversation. |

Got skimmed at a full service station in NJ. All kinds of charges to Sri Lanka . Credit Union reversed charges, and I got like $150 in rewards for the purchases which was weird, they earned 3x points.

Hopefully it's just a clerical error and not someone else trying to file under your identity.

Not so lucky. I file a joint return with my wife and unfortunately it appears that her identity was stolen. Ironically they had a recent hire in her HR department which only lasted a few weeks. IRS provided us with a pin# and affidavit and requested we file again, not electronically but snail mail. It could take 6 months to a year for us to get our return. We pay taxes all year only to get robbed of our return....... Unreal

Believe it or not, that is good. So long as you don't end up owing so much you get a penalty you are doing things right. It is better to hold on to your money throughout the year and gain interest/returns on it than to hand it over to Uncle Sam to hold and give back on April 15th.
It has always baffled me why folks like to get a refund every year. That is like be excited when you "find" the money you had been intentionally tucking under your mattress every week throughout the year.

Just got the call today from Bank of America, $2200 attempt at Burberry.com
Happened to me a few times in the past usually my CC company's are good and catch them right away and call me to verify. One way they were getting my #'s were keyloggers from spyware and malware that were DL'ed from torrenting movies/music. But I recently got a new computer and kept it clean so not sure how they got my # this time

Had this happen a couple of times over the years. Fortunately nothing more than a few dollars that were quickly refunded. All my CC's now text me with unusual charges to see if they are fraud or not. Makes things easy as I can immediately flag the card and stop the activity...

Just went though this with Citi. Got a text message from them saying I needed to call about suspicious activity. Seemed odd to get a text instead of an automated call or e-mail, so I called the number on the back of my card. Someone made 4 purchases ranging from $239 to $300 each at a store that sold clothing for plus size women. I'm a dude btw. Citi overnighted me a new card and removed the charges. Shit happens, but that's why I never use my debit card.

Just got hit on my Chase. I recall its the second time this year.
Really annoying to wait for new card and think how did they got by billing info. But great customer service from Chase.

Did Chase tell you in which countries the fraudulent activities came from and what they tried to buy?

Income taxes are not rocket science. You may make 60k on your first job out of college and get a 12k bonus. that bonus will be taxed at a higher than normal rate for you and you'll thus get a refund. I just don't buy the "no excuse for getting a refund" argument, it's weak. Set your withholding at the right number. If you get a refund, there are circumstances that lead to it (I'll mention it again itemized deductions). Very few people have the exact circumstances year in and out. |

Chase is really good. I had to buy like 5 ultrabooks for work, and easily have enough credit to cover it. The clerk was looking all nervous like I were Eliot Spitzer taking money out of a bank. I said what's the problem, then I said oh, wait a sec. I had an email on my phone asking me to verify the purchase.
