Doubt if it's ever gonna happen, or at least not for a really long time. BMW's performance technology is RWD based and the xDrive is invented mainly for winter driving. There is little advantage to xDrive on a racetrack except slightly quicker launch.

There was an article a while back quoting Albert Bierman regarding xDrive for the F8X platform and the answer is it's never going to happen. AWD is overrated anyways.

maybe with E-drive hybrid running front wheels. just a wild guess but its happening on all the supercars and that will trickle down.

This is from May 2014:
"Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport, BMW M GmbH President Friedrich Nitschke said the current model is “suffering” and adding all-wheel drive on the next-generation M5 could be a “solution.” The M boss says that the vehicle was not signed-off on it and further consideration to the additional weight brought on by the xDrive system is needed." http://groundy.com/t/bmw-m5-xdrive/ |

Im pretty sure next gen will have a form of x drive for all M cars. About a year ago bmw was talking about a system that would be xdrive until 100mph or so then push all the power to the rear, I guess we shall see, but I think its a great Idea.

That kind of system should help with the parasitic loss on the hwy that Audi RSs etc suffer from. Weight would still be an issue, and I'd strongly argue disengaging at 50-60mph would be better than 100mph. Thanks for sharing though, had not heard of this.

Will never happen. AWD just adds weight. For the market they have, it isn't what they are going to offer.
....FWIW, I don't understand the cross-shop with the X6M...but I have some real...uh...issues with that car.

This had been discussed before and even the Admin Jason on here said it will not happen.
xdrive = more weight added. BMW is trying to reduce weight as much as possible on the M3/M4 not add to it.

The X drive system in my X5 M works very well, for a vehicle this size and weight, the M division did a great job in dialing out understeer, and torque vectoring is just magical, when you need to rotate the car via the throttle.
I hope it does not come to the M3/4, as that would take away the driving dynamics that we love about these cars. Ultimately, it will come down to $$, if BMW calculates it would make financial sense to produce it, they will. If that happens, let's hope it would be an option, and not standard equipment.
