Oil Service
Hey all,
My 440i is due an oil service, should the include the micro filter? Also, can anyone suggest the recommended oil I should be using and how much I may need as I am providing it myself rather than the garage. Thanks |

Any 5W30 that meets the BMW LL04 specs and Mahle/Hengst/Mann filters J3OEF
Think your B58 has a dipstick so you can always do it that way saves crawling around on the floor, more so this time of year IIRC you'll need c6-6.5l - sometimes it's best to get x2 5L bottles and you've got enough there for a top up if needed Oil is a personal choice; but I've used oils from Triple QX to Shell to Liqui Moly and never really found any difference. Then again I change it twice a year generally Best to keep it fresh etc

Personally I'd just remove the cabin filter and see how dirty it is - it's one of those things that BMW use to justify the ludicrous service charge - it probably wont need changing unless you operate in very dusty or dirty conditions
It's easy to change though |

Thanks guys.
Would this be suitable? https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60250-m...ngine-oil.aspx Don't quite get what pricing structure on the below as they all seem to be the same brand and same 5w30 spec, unless there is more to it. https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60250-m...ngine-oil.aspx I'll look to eBay for a Mahle/Hengst/Mann filter but after a quick search, would this be suitable? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392085200...Bk9SR_jlyoz3Yg |

Re oil filter; just had a quick look and Mann filters are the same price as OEM on eBay currently (it's either Hengst or Mann that BMW use) OEM BMW filter here; that'll be spot on for the oil: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265063528...Bk9SR7DH54z3Yg Re cabin filter; yup, that looks fine

Thanks again chaps.
Quick question, I've just seen a YouTube on how to do it and it seems very easy to do. How would I go about updating the iDrive if I did it myself? or do I not need to and can reset instead? |

I’ll ask a stupid question here on oil grades. Both 0w30 and 5w30 looks to be approved for my F31 335d and appreciate not likely to be a huge difference on cold flow rate between 0 and 5 but…as BMW and whoever make their approved oil don’t do 0w30 in anything other than 1 litre or like massive drums, would it cause any harm/issue say doing an alternate change for winter and use 0w30 and then a summer change using 5w30?
0w30 is like what £12 a litre versus the FB deal posted of £5 a litre for 5w30. |

0W30 is better suited to much colder climates IIRC

I had read as an engine gets older with more miles that a thicker oil would tend to be better. Mine has always had 0w30 so was just curious whether could go to 5w30 and back on an alternate basis to 0w30 on a twice yearly change and whether it could do any harm.

BMW approve the use 0W30, 5W30, 0W40 and 5W40. Older would be 100K+ on a stout engine like the N57. The dealers use 0W30 Shell Helix Ultra, but they tend to flip flop between brands according to the best price, to them.
I use 5W40 because of the 30+ degree summers we've been having the past few years. |

There's quite a few out there but HU Manager seems to be the popular one.
One thing to bear in mind is your entries will be overwritten if you take it to BMW for a service, so you'll have to add them back in again afterwards, starting with the oldest first. I don't bother with any of that stuff. BMW get it once every 2 years and I do several interim oil changes myself, but don't record them. |

Either way; I wouldn't run 0W30 personally

The crappy 0W30 dealer Shell stuff caused an oil haze to come out of my oil filler after an hour's drive. 5W40 Fuchs GT1 Flex 3 completely got rid of that, and my engine is only on 58K, so it's far from a knackered old beater.
Bear in mind that oil vapour won't be doing your swirl flaps and intake ports/valves any good when it mixes with EGR soot. |
