I have found the super teles work best for bug hunting. Most of these images are taken from 20-30 feet away and are major crops. In several cases, 100% crops. The folks who came out with macro lenses were largely frustrated because their proximity scared the targets away. One of our group saw me with my 400 5.6 on the last trip and came out with his 100-400 this trip. He had much better success.
Preaching to the choir.

I use my 500mm with the 2.0x TC-III (which doesn't change the minimum focus distance). When I'm really focused on bug chasing, I add a 25mm Extension Tube to reduce the focus distance. With 1000mm and an ET, you can get in the 10 to 12-foot range and fill the viewfinder with a butterfly.

An important factor when comparing to similar lenses, like the 400/f5.6 and the 100-400mm, is the minimum focus distance at 400mm. The shorter, the better. Next, will it accept an ET and/or a TC? When you get all those elements together, you're really cooking, with luxurious working distances, combined with great magnification.

Here's a butterfly shot from last year, taken with a 700mm setup and no Extension Tube. Only about a 10% crop.

I need to try the 400 5.6 with an extension tube. The default MFD on that is almost 12'. But how badly does the extension tube shorten your max range? Can you still focus out to 50 feet or so if need be?

It varies with the lens, but I'd guess 2 to 3-feet. 12' is actually a pretty long MFD for 400mm. What is MFD for the 100-400mm?

This nest pole was put there by PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric) so the Osprey would stop nesting on top of the power pole, with potential both for fire, and great harm to the birds. They had to make sure it was higher, to coax the birds to the new location, overlooking the Russian River in Geyserville California

She was the 4th one in about 18 months. That's hard.

Ed, fantastic Point Berry shot, with super light, colors and textures. That one will sell.

I didn't answer the second part of your question. With the longer lenses, like your 400mm and my 500mm, you can't focus out at fifty-feet with any useful aperture. If you're shooting a variety of subjects, you'll have to take the ET on and off.

Thanks, DC. Would have been better if I'd taken the time to free up my geared head and used a remote. But I just wanted to see how well the TC worked with the Siggy. Clouds moved in right after that shot, so I'd have missed it all anyway if I had goofed around with all the bells and whistles.

I actually took the teleconverter off after a while as they ended up being too close for 700mm on several shots. I never even had to get out of the car. It was a great afternoon of shooting after a dreadful morning at work!
Yeah, that's a wall hanger.

I'd consider keeping the original aspect ratio and cropping even more off the wings. You've got enough pixels to get a nice, large print.

People are amazed at what percentage of my shots are from the car, maybe 80% for birds. I call it my car-blind.
