First car buy 2011 328i coupe or 335i coupe
Ok I'm 19 and want to buy my first BMW for myself. I know I want a 3 coupe but I have a problem. I like to drive and I like the sport if driving and I like fast cars. I know the 335i has 300 hp/tq but I heard it has slot of problems. I would get a 335i but I don't want to spend money on repairs or have my car at the dealer on several occasions. Honestly, for the people who owns them should I get a 335i, and are the problems worth it. What the hp/tq on the 2011 328i and can I get it with the paddle shifters. And to anyone who has a 328 do you like it and does it have enough power to have fun. and I'm totally paying for the car, insurance, repairs (after warranty) myself this I why I don't want to have a problematic new car I'd rather have reliability than more hp even thought I enjoy and respect fast cars.

have you considered a used z4 coupe (06-08) - no turbos, no idrive, pretty reliable, a/t with paddles are available, something you don't see often, and it's plenty of fun. You can get a really low miles one for a good bit cheaper than a new 3er

That's a little to small and I want something new, I would rather buy it new (even though I will depreciat as soon as I drive it off the lot) but I love BMW'S and plan to keep my first on forever.

335i.
You have 4 year warranty/free service. Unless you plan on keeping your car longer, you should be fine. If not then a 128i. Lighter and more nimble, same engine as 328i. 328i is too heavy for 230 hp, or get a GTI

335i
I got a 2007 335i and its great, its the perfect car. Has enough space, 4 Doors is way more practical but as powerful than the coupe. You got the double pipes in the back Just waiting to roar. And the twin turbo is Worth it for the gain in power. Its almost the same price as a 328 but if u like acceleration its money well invested. I don't really know much about the maintenance I just got mine. What got me to buy it was the cheap insurance and the fact it's faster than an 03m3
Go test drive and you will see for yourself |

I am 25 and have always been into cars, I really wanted the 335i when I first starting looking. To make a REALLY long story short, between the HPFP, being the first turbo engines BMW has release in the US in a LONG time, the added maintainence of a turbo car in general (turbo engines run very hot), along with the added insurance, and ETC, i decided on a 328i. Also being my first BMW, i was not exactly sure what I was getting myself into with maintainence, service, etc. I was also going CPO, and not new. Driving a 6MT 328 w/ sport package compared to driving the 335 w/ sport, obviously the 335i moves. However, the 328 is no slouch of it's own, and I was not looking for a "high-performance" car, even though some may consider the 328 one as well. My 328i is my daily driver too. I will be buying a beater for winter, but I drive my 328 everyday and have no regrets about not getting the 335. the 335 is badass for sure, but i think I would jump to the M3 before I bought a 335.

The 328 and 335i definatly have different feels to the drive. Honestly i agree with the aspect of the 335i being slightly unreliable due to problems etc. But in this case your leaning towards luck finding a 335I without major problems. I wouldn't worry so much about a 328i.

It sounds like you should skip the 3-series and go straight for the M6. That should be perfect for a 19-year-old who can't even be bothered by checking his spelling and grammar!

"forever" means you need to purchase extended warranty...an extra $2-3k, so instead of doing that and taking $10k depreciation loss the first year, buy slightly used CPO w/ 100k mile warranty....and do yourself a favor and get loaded 335i or is, or better yet, an M3

just go test drive both cars and see if one of them just appeals to you more. Some people feel like the 328i doesn't have enough power but if you end up liking it then you obviously pay less than getting the 335i and there's less chance of having problems (hpfp, etc.) cost of ownership will be lower on 328 too due to lower insurance costs and better fuel mileage (i think)
i just got the 2011 335i and i love it. I drove my friends 328i a lot but i had a M3 at the time and I didnt feel like the 328 was gonna do it for me. My test drive in the 335 really sold me on it, so much more torque than my e46 M3 |

If you're 19 and purchasing your first car, imo you should buy something a) reliable b) cheap to repair/insure and c) cheap to buy and drive it for a year, then move on to whatever your budget/desires allow.
I too purchased my 06 330 at 19, but felt confident in doing so since 3 years of owning 2 other cars (and learning about/performing nearly all maintenance not involving pulling the engine/trans) has taught me nearly everything I needed to confidently keep my car running well out of warranty, myself. Though you may have the option of relying on warranty, you're much better off saving your money and learning by going a less expensive route to begin with. Maybe in a year you'll also realize that the money you can spend on a $20k+ bmw is more wisely spent invested, at least until you graduate college, when you may need it most; but obviously this is a person-specific predicament and may not involve yourself. |

It all depends on your priorities. My 328 is plenty powerful for me because I'm not looking for speed and extreme performance on my car. I think it's a complete waste for me personally. I'm a student in college with a daily 50 mile commute without the need for all the extra horses, so I would prefer a 328 over a 335. Depends on your needs and wants.

I'd recommend MT also. Outside of the motor the cars are the same. Go drive a Miata BTW. IM not saying to buy one but you need to drive a fun lightweight car that is not a horsepower beast. "Sports cars" and "Muscle cars" are not the same. You can drop a Hemi into a charger and its not a "sports car" even if its world class fast. Operating a car vs. driving a car. Get a 335i if you can afford it and feel its a must have, but there are plenty of drivers that are using a MT and enjoy getting a feel for the drive. A Step 335 will alway beat a MT 328i in most races but its not a race. ITs not about LCD screens or GPS, or comfort access, its about road feel. If you need a statement car with amenities go with an infiniti. Learn about the history of the BMW and understand its not about the Luxury r the amenities, its the soul of the car. Naturally BMW has to offer these things but the cars historically were light weight lower displacement engines to offer europeans a fun car to drive without burning expensive gas and high taxes. They were not the fastest things on the road but they were comfortable sports "touring" cars. |

BMWs, cheap, and reliability don't exactly belong in the sentence. Do yourself a favor and get a used car. BMWs aren't cheap to buy, maintain, or run. You don't want the thought of how much your car is going to cost hanging over you constantly.

Couldn't agree more. I beat the shit out of my first car until I learned how to drive PROPERLY. You need a car that you don't care about damaging, because... its going to happen. But if you do decide to go with a 3.... go with the 335. The ability to pass 99% of people on the highway is amazing. The thing is like a rocket ship! |

If you go to the right dealership, CPO is pretty much brand new, except for the mileage. They have a huge checklist of things that have to be done in order to certify it, including all current recalls, TSB's and mechanical/cosmetic issues. So it'll be pretty much new quality for thousands less. I still have factory+CPO warranty and I am 150% satisfied with the 335. The 328 is too slow for my taste and the M3 is pretty baller, but it guzzles gas, so the 335i was the right choice for me. Plus with some mods and a good tune it can be just as fast as an M3 at a fraction of the cost and almost double the gas mileage! |

Anyway, OP. In my opinion get a 328. A 335 will definitely make more visits in it's life to a shop. At your age and your need for reliable transportation, 328 fits you. |

335 is a beast but most will tell you less reliable long term. If you do purchase one, make sure you get one with a warranty! The 328 is less powerful obviously, but IMO is a fantastic daily driver and the perfect blend of looks, sportiness and comfort/reliability. The NA inline 6 is buttery smooth and a pleasure to listen to throughout the rev range. Take care of it and it will last you a long time. I had 2 turbocharged cars before this and it was a headache (gas, insurance, less reliable, etc). However, forced induction cars always put a massive smile on my face. The 328 or something like a GTI would be ideal for you now....but perhaps a 335 or an M3 later on. I know my next car is definitely going to be a 335xi or an M3!
