Just had this very problem on my 320i touring. Had the warnings come up on the centre console but when I pulled over I was surprised that the fan hadn’t kicked in and the temperature gauge on the dash was within normal range. Plus there was no warning of low coolant even though the header tank was empty.

Car is in the garage awaiting the dreaded estimate to fix. But thanks for the post, found it really useful. Definitely something for all drivers of this model to consider.

Yeah some people even advise to always have this very pipe spare in your boot wherever you go. Since it had like 4 or 5 revisions I believe it's still not very reliable.

Good luck. It was 1500 or 2500 for us out of pocket because it was a few months before they rolled out the recall.
We did get our money back with the recall AND they re did it with the "new" part. Whole lot of bullshit, they should have upgraded it when they did it the first time since it was a known issue

They should do a recall in the US too. They were saying it’s a wear and tear item.

As of Jan '22, BMW has issued a service action in the US too. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1889354

Looks like the issue is mainly with 4 cylinder cars, mine wasn't a massive leak though I could see it dripping. No overheating but I went back to the dealer twice to show it was leaking and they took care of it, I still have the receipt.
