So it was Sunday AM, getting ready for my track day at Thunderhill on Monday morning when I discovered that my normally reliable and pedantic mechanic forgot to install the cap on the Urea filler vent. Urea was seeping out of the circular hatch and just looked quite messy.
Seeing that it was Sunday, I could not get a hold of any replacement part so I had to improvise. As it turns out the diameter of the filler vent is almost the same size as the neck of a standard wine bottle. I took a cork from my favorite central California coast Syrah, and cut it in half. I gave a quick wrap of duct tape to make sure no cork "crumbs" got into the system. Finally, I drove a wood screw in the center, just in case it was difficult to extract. Bottom line, it worked in a pinch. Good to know BMW engineers must be wine lovers as well! Off to the track I went, perhaps with a slightly delicious smell coming from my tailpipe! |
