Why are there slits between the Cylinders!

Hi. Where are there slits cut between the cylinders on some n54 blocks but not others?

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LPi...usp=drive_link

Because I'm doing a build and i've never seen anything like this before. My 2007 335i did not have slits. Some Joe replaced the front main seal using a cold chisel so I bought a junk yard block come to find it has slits cut between the cylinders as if it had some kind of enhancement.

Thought it was a fluke but there are many such blocks for sale and when I came across your post I discovered you have the slits. Does anyone know what they are for, why some n54's have them and some do not. Bottom line is, can I use this block? All other nonsense notwithstanding. Is this a flaw, modification or a production design?

Thank you.
