Huh, I stand corrected! Looks like only the 330i and the N51 have them! I thought 328i N52 had a single one, but looks like none!

X3's with the 3.0Si engine had them too. My gal's X3 is quicker than my touring but it has shorter gears too. They were rated at 260hp and same 225 lbs/tq

My 325i doesn't have any DISA flaps. I've seen many 328s at the junkyard without any flaps also.

Yeah, I obviously haven't been paying attention!!! I always thought every car had a single one, but then only some cars had two. Looks like it's two or none!

Back on topic, what's the verdict? Are the new Bosch starters any better than the old ones?

My 330 had the starter replaced by the previous owner but the old service records don't indicate what brand was used. I haven't inspected yet to see, but I'll check next time I have the cowl off. Starter is VERY powerful and has no issues starting the engine, but there's a squealing/screeching sound when the starter winds down after the gear disengages from the flywheel. At least I think it's the starter, need to confirm with a mechanics stethoscope.

It was the original Valeo unit from 2006 with 220K miles on it. Dirt/grime attracted which quickly wore out the brushes and one of the slip rings. I bought a PURE ENERGY brand on Rock Auto for $120 to keep the car running while I took my time with the rebuild. Unfortunately I ruined the shaft trying to tap out one of the bearings... so the 'pure energy' (made in Taiwan) alternator has been on the car ever since and is running strong, 5 years and 40K miles later.

I bought a Valeo based on comments and seeing that a rebuilt Bosch now costs more than a new one is crazy speak. Bosch must make bank if they can sell a new unit that cheap.

Yeah its a great option. When my 330's starter failed like a year ago, I took it to a shop and they rebuilt it. It cost me $80 in my country and I did the removal/install job myself. It's been working fine since then.

Uhhh....TYC.

Some say the newer Bosch cranks fine. But if the carbon brush area is still open (like on squeaky blower motors) then it will probably fail the same way. That said, both TYC and new Bosch (not the reman w/ 24-month) carry lifetime warranty, so just a coin toss (regardless of the price difference).
