I'm actually very surprised by the Rangers this year. Clearly, Lundqvist is a huge reason why they're doing so much better. The rule changes also really help a guy like Jagr too.

As a Flyers fan, I can honestly say I'm thrilled that they are 1 point out of first place. With all of the injuries to key players this year, it really demonstrates what an excellent coach Ken Hitchcock is and how deep their farm system is. Still though, injuries are part of the game and if the Flyers don't start healing up I don't think all of these rookies will be able to handle the pressures of a Stanley Cup run.

I found this post on another message board denoting the injuries that have hit the Flyers this year. Pretty amazing...

Missed Extended Time (number of games injured)
Currently Injured
Rookie

Goal: Esche (19), Nittymaki

Defense - Hatcher, Johnsson(19), Pitkanen(24), Desjardins(37), Rathje, Therien(11), Jones, Meyer

Offense - Primeau(47), Gagne(8), Forsberg(15), Kapanen(22), Knuble, Handzus, Radivojevic(8), Stevenson(36), Ready, Carter, Richards, Umberger, Savage, Brashear, Nedved

BTW - side note: What does everyone think of the new "Sleek" hockey uniforms players will be wearing in the Olympics? I read the NHL is considering them too.
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/10952924/

Personally, I hate 'em.

agreed. nothing compares to the atmosphere of a hockey game in my opinion.

Although Lundqvist has been great, I think it's the whole team's dedication to team defense that has helped a lot. Jagr can score a ton of goals but if nobody plays d then it's all for naught. I'm a Renney believer now. He installed a system that everybody bought into.
About the uniforms, yuck. Like playing hockey in tights

Kinda hard to pull the jersey over the guy's head when you're fighting, eh????

I agree, let the girls wear 'em! The sleeker THEY are, the better!

Speaking of the womens hockey - Team USA has won their first 2 games with a combined score of 10-0. In the first game they outshot their opponent something like 58-9. 9 SHOTS? They killed 10 PP's and gave up 9 shots?

Talk about bad competition.

taem canada has won by like 12 goals in each of their first 2 games. i was watching the US womens game and the analyst talked about how the US and canada are in their own echelon in terms of international pay and the other nations have quite a bit of catching up to do.

Although I'd like to see the U.S. win, I think they'll be lucky to get a Bronze.

1. Canada
2. Sweden
3. USA

Men's hockey will be good - but I am still 100% against letting the pros play in the Olympics. Not just for hockey, but all sports. There's something very special about watching an athlete, or group of athletes lift themselves from obscurity to greatness.

Whether you're Canadian, European, or American, one has to admit that the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team's "Miracle on Ice" was true testament to the Games... and we will never see anything like it again. At least in terms of team sports.

but what do you really consider pros?
isn't the olympics all about being the world best? On top of the world? So we shouldn't have any people like Beckham, Ronaldo in Summer Olympic?
If we don't allow the best to play in the Olympics, the gold medal is really the best? I dobt it

I do agree that the Olympics should be the best athletes competing -- it's just that to me it seems as if many of the pro athletes walk in there with a feeling of superiority over all the other athletes. I get the impression that while they are honored to play for their country, they do not respect the Olympics.

A perfect example is the U.S. Basketball team. I remember watching Allen Iverson & the rest of the team walking in during the opening ceremony lagging behind the rest of the US Olympians, swaggering, joking, and seemingly making a mockery of the whole thing. Kind of like they knew they'd be blowing out Croatia or some team the next night 150-20.

In a nutshell, this is how I see it...

International Professional Hockey Supremacy = World Cup of Hockey

International Amateur Hockey Supremacy = Olympics

Amature will not be the world best
ok
if you want those to be stop
punish them
kick them out of the Olympic
ban them
don't need to punish the whole group
