EKPM fan dying

Hello!

Recently bought an upgraded fuel pump for my E93 335i. I decided to upgrade my ekpm2 and add heatsinks, upgrade the thermal pad and add a 12 volt 5015 fan. Spliced the wires, soldered everything nicely together and started the car. The fan starts spinning and dies after a second. By testing we found that the fan is not defective (I bought another 5V fan that also died after a second of running) and the current that we get is around 13V on startup and then quickly drops to around 7V. My electrical knowledge is super limited and I feel like I’m out of options. What to look for?

Where is the EKPM for the E93? Is it difficult to get to and modify?

Not really that difficult, but there are a lot of clips that you can break. You have to remove the rear seats and the black partition storage trim. Then you remove the ekpm add the wires and a bracket for the fan.

EKPM is a pain to access on the E93. I had to remove way too much when I upgraded mine. Tried to get rid of the shadow code but it remains.

I heard the EKPM2 is a more robust unit than the EKPM3? I'm not sure. The circuit board its smaller though.

Which wires did you splice for the fan power? I don't recall the details but it should be the 12V constant input to the EKPM and NOT the output. That behavior sounds like it tapped into the output.

Ekpm2 is better for heat management that’s true.

I did tap into the output (small black connector with 2 wires). I can tap into the input, but the question is will the fan shut down when the car goes to sleep?

Well that's your issue. I don't recall if the EKPM uses pulse width modulation or varies the voltage, but if you want your electric fan to run when the EKPM is powered then you'll need to wire it to the power source (input) to the EKPM. EKPM likely isn't powered when the car is shut down. I am too lazy to look up the wiring diagram but I'm fairly certain it switches off when the car goes to sleep.

Wiring it to the input worked, thank you. For anyone interested - ekpm goes to sleep after 30 minutes.
