Transmission malfuntion BMW X6. 2016 (F16)

Hi All,

I owe X6, first reg Dec 2016 with a millage of 61000 miles.
Until last Friday car was driving fine - no problems at all.
Friday morning the car shisted in drive and the gear went in with a jerk. Was shifting gear badly for about 1/2 mile when it all settled down and was driving fine. Next day my husband wanted to investigate the problem (only me drives this car) and he realized that car did not have reverse gear anymore. When shifting to reverse (shifter indicates reverse, instrument cluster also) car drives forward! Shifting gears (R<->N<->D) was very rough. We did another test 2 days later when we allowed the car to run 30 mins before shifting gears and this time it was smooth with no jerk but still car moved forward in reverse gear.

I will have ISTA on Thursday so no codes read yet.

Any advice/ ideas/ previous experience will be welcomed.

Thank you!

Hard to say but normally this seems to be more a hydraulic control issues instead of gear/clutch issue. This is managed by the mechatronics / valves which has really easy access. Just needs to remove oil pan. Attached picture for reference only.

I would suggest to replace the fluid/pan filter (as preventive) and replace valves/mechatronics if necessary. It will require some diagnosis work.

Follow some information after quick search
https://www.sonnax.com/parts/4590-zip-kit

If whole mechatronics is replaced need to write the VIN number on it to match your vehicle. This needs to be done before installation but there are people who offers the service ... just need to look for them.

My guess is either a solenoid for a certain clutch pack is not engaging or a clutch disc set burnt up.

Mechanic can see my car on the 12th - he only does gearboxes and ZF 8ph is well known to him.
I am mean time I will scan the car with ISTA when I get it lastest on Thursday. I hope I will have some codes that may indicate the problem. I am surprised with it as the car has pretty low mileage.

Fingers crossed I won’t need to sell my kidney to repair it.

Also worth mentioning this happened overnight. The day before car was driving fine

Update: car rolls forward and stop in reverse but accelerating does not make car to move forward of back. Sort of like not engaging.

Neutral is neutral- wheels moving freely, can push the car no issue here.

Drive is a drive but it engages with a heavy kick/ jerk.

Manual - does work I can shift gear - obviously did not drive the car.

Roll on 12.04 - appointment booked with gearbox specialist

Another update:

ISTA connected - gear shifter in position P ISTA shows as gear 6.

Gear shifter in position N ISTA shows 1st gear but wheel are moving freely

I lost the plot here 😩

I know this isn't really what you want to hear, but I owned a E70 X5 I purchased 2nd hand from a girl at work. Car was clean, test drove great, panned out fine with a pre purchase inspection.
However, when the car got fully up to operating temp, the transmission would start acting up, slowing to a stoplight and it would kick hard downshifting. Squirrely shifting coming from the stop (only at temp) etc.
I purchased a new mechatronics and still no go. I only relay this due to losing money chasing a ZF tranny issue. Hopefully you found a good indy, but I would run if I was to chase this issue again.

I dont messages related to transmission failure. on the right side you can see the mileage the message was displayed initially.
suggest to delete all. run the engine and shift the gears in order to show up the messages related to the transmission.
do you have transmission light on dash?

Code 420311 that is transmition related code: gear ratio monitoring gearshift 1 to x plausible.

No light do dash

No reverse gear, ISTA reading different gears from what shifter shows.

I see. very interesting why no light on dash.
seems to be potentially a hydraulic issue which is solved with mecatronics or solenoid.
transmission control is based on pressure so wear and internal leakages can create all kind of issues. the issue on your case could be simple to resolve but the challenge is to find where.

Thank you, I am booked in with the garage that only has been dealing with gearboxes for the last 50 years. I believe that almost everything is repairable it is just a matter of £££ (I am in U.K.)

Will keep you posted. I noticed there is loads of threads that are “unfinished” - not good! I will not leave it that way. Fingers crossed I won’t have to sell my kidney to pay for it (only kidding)

thank you. My issue in the past was different ... could not get in gear ... was solved by replacing the mecatronics. Keep us posted.

Exploring the topic a bit more and getting familiar with ISTA I came across this info.
What does it mean?

not sure what it means .... is the issue only when hot?

to provide a better understanding of the hydraulic control on automatic transmission this video provides a fantastic explanation besides the fact is for Porsche PDK the control has the same logic.

As I said this is potentially a hydraulic control issue than a gear/clutch issue assuming no metallic noises or have driven the transmission in limp mode which can burn the clutches.

Thank you for asking. Not yet, unfortunately. Car has been towed to the garage yesterday morning but they have not touched it yet. They have delays with work in progress so hopefully Monday or Tuesday will know a bit more.

Still nothing! Unfortunately when I booked the car in they forgot to mention that diagnostics is one thing and repair is another. It does not go hand in hand. 3 weeks waiting for diagnostics - I have as not told anything more that I already knew - now 3 weeks for the workshop! It is a joke!
