Wow.

I guess it's a good thing that he recognized when it was time to move on...

I guess if you only talking about the consumer side of his company.

Steve had/has a very successful motorsport division, that provided engine programs for many teams across many race series. Including providing Dinan S62 and S65 engines for Chip Ganaasi's Daytona Prototype team, all through their most successful seasons. Winning many championships and huge races like 24 hour of Daytona.

Steve and Chip already have a long history together. Him stepping aside from Dinan BMW doesn't surprise me. I sure Ford had something to say about it, wanting Steve to make the commitment 100% if he came aboard.

This probably started when BMW decided to lock their DMEs to even Dinan. If even Dinan has to use a piggy back to tune, then they lose one of their main competitive advantages. It'll be interesting to see where they go as a company, although it'll be tough marketing an identical product for four times as much money even if you do get a warranty.

If I wanted loud, I would have bought something from the many competitors that sound like tin cans, IMO.

Why the haters? He has built a brand with truly engineered products from a real company that seem to have the blessing of BMW and has been in business for many years. If you don't like the products...., don't buy them. Obviously, many of us like the comfort of a long term company.

I suspect like most of these types of "name" sales the input costs will be driven down (by moving production offshore) and that the customers won't see much difference, maybe a slight reduction in quality. Maybe a mandrel bend from a foreign country isn't quite as sexy as one performed in the shop in Morgan Hill but it probably works the same.

The objective is to make more money for the shareholders of the parent company. That will likely be accomplished through the efficiency the parent company can bring to the input side and on the marketing side. All of the small companies that helped Dinan grow will get shelved or given different marching orders and all the big volume suppliers that the rest of their brands use will start supplying goods. They'll consolidate the marketing and advertising activities under a single firm etc etc., consolidated legal and accounting, common financial facilities..access to money and resources Dinan wouldn't be able to get on their own.

If the existing engineers that work there are being rewarded properly and given a good place to work they'll stay. They will probably be able to lean on corporate resources and get new products to market faster.

Modern business. Congrats to Steve Dinan for building something meaningful, being rewarded for it and as a result sufficiently well off enough to go back to racing.

Isn't this a good example of the American Dream? Take some risk, build something great and cash out with your dignity intact?

I don't think this is then end of Dinan, quite the opposite. The cognoscenti will never approve but I'll bet it becomes easier the get a DINAN badge (or cheaper).

Cheaper than an engine though.

Wow, wasn't expecting to hear this news. A founder leaving is rarely good news for the brand.

Ummm....yeah. As soon as the N54 arrived and the piggyback world exploded, DINAN no longer mean't anything to a lot of people.

When I think of Dinan, i think of E39s, E46s, etc

Dinan was sold sometime late in 2013, and chief engine builder Dusty Renteria and a bunch of other key personnel bailed back then. This also why they released that bullcrap piggyback system after years of saying they would never take the half-assed way out.

Don't know if it really matters but I, too, was thinking of Dinantronics for my car. Kind of rethinking that now as I'm not too fond of the parent company that took over Dinan.

Dinan always sucked with Steve and still does.... So many better options in marketplace.

He should just retire.

He sold the company. How is that not a form of retirement.

He sold it at the peak.

He is no dummy.

I've sold two of my companies in the last two years on top. Doesn't necessarily mean retirement. But for Steve let's hope it does.
