Exhaust is not mandatory

To prospective buyers....in my opinion the stock exhaust "sound" of the f8x is very satisfying. I know this is a very personal thing but just saying....from a guy who has replaced the stock exhaust on all M3 and M5 previously owned, too many motorcycle and Porsche exhaust to count - about the last thing I would do to this car is swap exhaust because of sound. Opinion only but not sure it's been stated this directly yet.

I have Zima downpipes and Jb4 installed. I got the car warm and hit sport plus( engine ) and when the exhaust valves opened I unplugged them, covered them and tied them up, WoW! Give it a try

I have to agree. Not saying I wont replace the stock exhaust with an aftermarket eventually, but it is far down on the list. Tune and springs before, for sure.

I don't mind the sound of the exhaust at all... But I do hate the way the muffler is sticking below the bumper. They could have made it thinner or at least attempted to hide it. Even with diffuser you can still see the gigantic thing.

Kind of don't mind the cabin synthesizer either, and I never thought I'd say that.

I agree with the OP. Too many people have been crying about the sound. Going into sport or sport plus from eco mode (active sounds or not) is very satisfying. When those flaps open it sounds excellent. Paying $6K for an exhaust just to sound (and look) a little better is just insane. I would much rather put that money toward paying the M3 off!

I agree with Op but damn the videos are killing me. Temptations...

But yea when i first test drove the car the stock sound really impressed me. It does seem sufficiently loud. Even listening as the porters pulled the car up for me was impressive. I thought it had aftermarket on it already.

The only reason I would change out the stock-exhaust is with one that sits under the rear diffuser and is not visible like the stock one. That's my only qualm with the stocker. Before I started selling BMW's, I was a certified welder so I may just fab my own exhaust-system.

When I picked up my M3 the dealer told me to put into sport plus and rev it so I could hear the sound. I told him I'll do it in efficient mode and lets hear the sound. Of course he just rolled his eyes like I was being annoying. I've been on this site a long time before I got my car I know it sounds good in sport +. I also agree with the OP, that the exhaust doesn't need to be replaced but people always want more so live and let live.

After 2 weeks & 2600 kms in my M4,I have to agree with the OP that there is no need to rush out and do an exhaust on this car.It sounds pretty good in Sport or Sport + but will never sound as great as the S65 did with a proper aftermarket system.I have no problem with that with the increased performance of the S55 and much improved fuel mileage.

A full cat back system that adds hp/tq makes sense. Axle back replacement for sound on the new M3 not so much, unless you really have money to burn.

Ditto...The car sounds like shit unless under WOT, can everyone just admit it. Lots of options make it much better, but cost is ridiculously high on the f8x.

does holding the exhaust flaps open make it sounds better at lower RPM's? Is there any drawback to doing that?

Although I don't have my car yet I share the OP's sentiment. An exhaust that is costing as much as the ones advertised need to have a nice note (subjective), but also look nice, and most importantly (at least to me), have significant performance potential. Until these criteria are met I will be sending my mod money elsewhere.
