Seems like the washer in between the top hat and the bearing is upside down. It is causing the binding. It is happening when the car is on the ground since there is weight on it. You can probably take the front suspension out and flip the dome washer between the spring top hat and the bearing. The flat part of the dome washer sits on top of the spring top hat. The dome MUST be pointed upward so the bearing will spin freely and not bind.
I am referring to #8 in the picture:

Same issue here… Thinking its the Steering Column. I have the same clicking/clunking as in the vid. I can also make the sound with the motor off and by putting slight pressure on the steering wheel in either direction.

Hey guys I hate to resurrect an old thread but this is the only video I have been able to find that matches my steering related sounds (while stationary) to a tee.
OP did you ever get this resolved? Was it the the dust cover like robc1976 noted was the issue for him or did yours involve the end links and or a steering component? Any feedback from anyone else with experience on this issue would be greatly appreciated as well. TIA |

Check your steering rack bolts. I had similar noise and turned out one of the bolts holding the steering rack in place was a little loose. Probably from a DP install.

Hey guys I had similar issues with popping noises coming from front end. Left side to be specific. Car is a '08 335i coupe. Struts were changed in 2013. Everytime I would turn there would be a creaking popping type of noise. I purchased new sway bar end links thinking that would solve the problem and it didn't. After several days of jacking up the car i checked the torque specs on the strut bolts it turns out they were out of spec. I tightened them to 25ftlbs. Also re torqued the left control arm. Turns out the problem was a loose control arm and the 3 strut bolts that were not torqued at the correct ftlbs. All on the left side.I hope this helps other fellow 3 series owners.

Awesome. Thanks for the info! Our cars sure are picky...
I love my 335 but with all the issues and noises I 've had (and stll have - dealer is useless), and the $ I have spent, I really miss my Hondas. Harry
