my thoughts on my 2008 335i
These are my thoughts on my 2008 335i Sedan (sports pkg + ipod USB) after 2 months and 1500 miles. My previous car was an 2006 Honda Accord EX. I loved that car, but the BMW blows it away. I have have come up with a list of things I wish BMW could improve since come-on guys and gals... no car is perfect. For the pros I could keep going on and on so I decided only to give the cons...
These are the things I wish BMW could improve upon: 1. The cup holders are very badly designed. Come-on BMW, you guys did a good job with cup-holders on the 128i, why not the the 335i? If you have a passenger with long legs, their legs constantly keeps hitting the cup holder. Also I regularly go the gym and my gym bottle is slighty wider than the cup holder. 2. Not enough front storage space even for my GPS. I have a Garmin 2610 GPS. There is no space to store it anywhere inside the car. The only place I can store it is in the trunk. 3. The blind spots are really bad because of the smaller side mirrors. 4. The Volume settings are never stored. This may not be such a big drawback, but I hate turning up the volume everytime I start the car. Any settings to overcome this? 5. Ipod nano song title does not scroll. When my 2G ipod nano is hooked up to the usb connector, the song title does not scroll. I have to click on the track option to view the entire track information. Any settings to overcome this? 6. When you play Mp3 CD's it does not display the info from the mp3 ID3 tag. Is there an option for this? 7. For those with the ipod USB option, you have a case in the arm rest compartment to store you ipod. Well the cable that my BMW dealer gave me is so small that it's impossible to keep it in the case. I have been keeping it in the cooler (the circular thing in the arm rest). They told me that that was the cable that came with the car. 8. No cargo net "option" for the trunk storage. I asked my dealer if it's possible to install it extra since I hate driving my car fast specially if there is food in the cargo. They told me no. 9. The premium Logic 7 bass isn't that deep. I listen mostly to rock and metal, but I felt the premuim 13 speakers Logic 7 system should have had better bass. On my Honda accord, I replaced the stock speakers with JBL's and boy it sounded neat. I liked it better than the logic 7 system. Last edited by ruthlessbmw; 11-11-2008 at 01:34 PM.. |

I hear the new Acura TL has great cupholders and their stereo should be good.

It can also open those giant sized Foster's beer cans if you use the front grill.

Well I love my car and just felt that these were a few things that maybe could have improved. I am just giving my humble opinion.

We know... you just have to keep in mind the E90 has been out for three years now; so topics like the cup-holders have been beaten to death. Trust me - search for E90 cup-holder complaints.
Like you said, no car is perfect. Anyone who thinks that their BMW is hands down the greatest automobile in every regard is mistaken. But BMW does a great job at building a driver's car. It's all about compromises, and most of us here would gladly give up the cup-holders and some stereo quality for the more engaging drive of a BMW. As for the mirrors, give it time. Within a month or so, you shouldn't have an issue with them. And if you do, you may not have them positioned correctly.

Thanks for sharing; while not new, still helpful to someone considering a 335.
The small mirrors and lack of well-designed cupholders are certainly annoyances, but not deal-killers. |

I have been considering buying a 335i and thought this posting would give me some insight on the car from a driver's perspective, but I read complaints that could have easily come from the passenger.
My Z4MC has most of the same issues and I love the car!?! The 335i would serve as the daily driver. Big Leo BTW...is the new Acura TL ugly or what!

I came from a 350Z. Comfort-wise, the 335i is way better. My only complaint is that the Z felt like a race-car.

Well you are coming from a Honda Accord, that's a family sedan with different intentions. A bimmer is more performance oriented and it's not going to be as comfy as your old car. In regards to the stereo, you can get a good "thump" in the Honda (if that's what you're looking for), but it sounds distorted and muffled. Logic 7 is by no means a great system, but it is pretty good. Throw away the JBL's and get some Dynaudio's or Focal Utopia's for your mids and highs, if you want better sound.

solution
Recommendation, just buy the proper mug. I never put paper cups or fast food cups in my cupholder. I just buy the drink and pour it into my own mug which fits perfectly into the cup holder.
Even at .90 g turns the cup does not spill (top closed) or tilt. I got the mug from a university store the bottom half fits snug into the cup holder and the top half of the mug is 1 inch larger in diameter which sits on top of the cup holder. good luck |
