Which Flywheel for FBO car DMF or SMF?
Hey there
My clutch is going to the end, mostly I drive in the city I decided to go with SPEC stage2+ clutch kit as it is good for FBO power levels and still comfy on the street/traffic. Now my question which FLYWHEEL single mass oem or dual mass stainless steel? Please advice me which version to choose will oem flywheel is ok for 350-400whp or it will fail again? Anybody did single mass share your experience. how noisy it is? Thanks |

go with oem dmfw if your going to keep torque limit under say 450-475 ish
anything higher and you might want to consider a steel smfw from spec.

Also curious to hearing this as I'm in the same situation. That 450-475 torque seems to be right at the border between what a FBO + e85 (which is my setup) would be at, and what an upgraded turbo setup could produce.

Thanks guys really appreciate
For now I am thinking to leave stock turbos because still I want to do meth and exhaust but after that I dont know will I stop... In the beginning I thought I will do just tune + fmic but you only finish moding when you sell the car Anyway I think I will stay with DMF even though mine is dead and I need a new one. I would hate to drive slowly in the city and people would look at you thinking WTF is wrong with your car... |

I'd go with a SM steel. I have that with a stg 3+ no issues. Doesn't really chatter that much.

I re-used my DMFW with my Horepower Freaks Stage 1 clutch without any issues and I am doing 460+ WHP and 533 WTQ. I just resurfaced it. I wanted to maintain stock driveablity as possible. No issues with here.

However 2 months ago the stock DMFW completely disintegrated while doing a full throttle 6th gear acceleration @ 120+ mph, and it almost destroyed my transmission and my crank shaft at the same time as well. Had to have repairs made to the gear box. The HPF Stage 2 clutch however survived. My original DMFW had about 85k miles on it when it happened. I now run a SPEC stage 3+ clutch and a SPEC steel SMFW, and after breaking it in I can certainly say that this is what I should have done in the first place. So much easier to launch the car properly every time, and chatter isn't really anything to worry about IMO. Everyday driveability isn't really an issue either, not for me at least. In retrospect I had way too many concerns about going for a SMFW solution in the first place, the SPEC combo really works great. Of course I have only used it for 2k miles yet, but many others have used it for a long time without issues.

I have 13k miles on my spec stg3+ with spec steel flywheel and i can say the clutch takes all the abuse i throw at it. The steel flywheel is chattery especially with the ac on, and it's very grabby. If you don't mind the chatter you'll love the spec combo....

I know that going 500whp+ would really be better to go SMF but for me not really sure. Would like to hear in person how loud is the chatter. And what about real feeling in the car is it like a truck almost I mean how would you rate from 1-10 points comparing with stock setup Noise 1-10 Vibrations 1-10 Pedal smoothness 1-10 |

I had my local shop do all the repairs, they had to dismantle another gear box to get the parts. Quote:
If anyone near you runs a SPEC Stage 3+ (or 2+) with a steel SMFW you should ask for a ride/drive.

1 being stock
Noise - 7-8 with AC on / 4-5 AC off (but understand it is only when in neutral at a light or stop sign. My wife and mom both thought something was wrong with my car when they first heard it FWIW. Consider a 10 the worse waste gate rattle you have ever heard. Vibrations 3-4 (reverse and 1st gear in the morning, not once warmed up then 1-2) Needs more throttle to engage but you will learn to like it better, especially when being aggressive/launching Pedal Smoothness - 2 shorter engagement point near the top the peddle. It is quite firmer than stock but nothing major and again you will get use to it. I will also add you will notice the steel SMFW will rev quicker and drop quicker in between shifts, thus allowing quicker shifts.

500+ WHP SMFW
Anything less should be able to get away with the DMFW. We recommend a new OEM DMFW as historically we've seen many horror stories of the DMFW not being resurfaced correctly. As mentioned above the SMFW will have some chatter. If you opt for a DMFW and make in excess of 500WHP+ there is potential for your vehicle to throw misfires codes. Well sell many spec clutches a week. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them. You should choose a clutch based on your torque. Not what others are running. |
