paint respray, good or bad.

Hello. I purchased my E92 with the knowledge that the paint was in rough condition. It’s in interlagos blue, my favorite color. I’m planning on having the car resprayed in interlagos blue. Had anyone done this, and do you know if this will add value or deter a future potential buyer. Thanks for your time.

any kind of new paint is usually a negative for resale. a full respray even more so. that said, if you bought it with that priced in, you could come out ok.

I just had the entire front end of my Interlagos Blue E90 resprayed - bumper (including reflectors filled), hood, and fenders + PPF. It looks exponentially better than it did before.

The paint was chipped to hell so for me it made sense. I'm not at all worried about the future owners of my car. When (if?) the time comes to sell, if they don't like the fact it's been repainted they can move along to the next car for sale. For me, I'd rather buy a car with a nicely resprayed front end vs. one completely trashed with rock chips... who would want that just to say 'it's all original paint!' ? I guess some would.

Your car, you do what will make you happy.

Yeah I don’t mean that a respray will make the car worth less than bad paint (unless it wasn’t priced in), just what it won’t bring resale back up materially.

Dude I’ve repainted my front, rear and sides countless times. I have no plan on selling and when I do sell I can guarantee they will be paying what I want for the car or they can move along. Short answer…..yes a respray might be unappealing to someone but are you gonna lose 5-10k on the sale? No fucking way! Enjoy the car and do what you want with it but don’t cut corners and you will be a ok when you sell. And I’m curious, how would anyone know I’ve painted my car with no accidents and a good paint job. Just have your shop paint appropriately. No spray on fender mounting area, remove all window seals and replace them. Lastly in another 5-10 years when my or your car is still in great shape do you think that new fucker in love with your car will not buy it when you tell them it’s been repainted? If your car isn’t a rare spec with low miles the new buyer will try to knock down the cost anyway. Do what makes you happy with your car.

Paint condition was considered in final price. Thank you for the input!

I agree with you 100%. Thanks for your input! Feel better proceeding with a good paint job. I don’t plan on selling my car any time soon. At least not till I can afford a gt3. Thanks again, god bless

I never understood the emphasis on 'original paint' if it's in shitty condition. Any car that's been driven normally - ie not a garage queen - the paint will be crap after 10-12 years. I'd actually pay more for a properly resprayed car with the paint in good condition.

respray to a different color, yes. respray to your current color, no. IMO, accident history is what brings the value down... not a respray.

My front bumper needs paint every other year. Rock chips just build up no matter what. It’s an unavoidable result from driving a low car. I say do whatcha want and enjoy the thing. Let the person who buys it from ya worry about the little things I mean do they need to know I’m on my 3rd set of floor mats from cigarette burns?

Looks like you're in SoCal.

I actually have an amazing paint guy in Covina if you're looking for a respray!

I’m actually local to Covina coincidentally. I’ll definitely take a local rec. I was going to check out Strauss in Irwindale but he’s always busy with project from what I can see

Looks fantastic. What did you respray? The front bumper and hood only? Cost? Thx.

Thanks, I'm really happy with how it turned out, it looked pretty terrible before the respray. Paintwork included hood, bumper, both fenders, and both mirror caps.

Obviously cost will vary greatly depending on geographic location and shop, but I paid roughly $5300 OTD in the greater Seattle area at a shop with really good reviews. I'd met a fellow forum member at a local meet who had paintwork done at this same shop, that's how I found out about them.

Another $1600 or so to PPF all the above mentioned panels/mirror caps. So pretty expensive, but I have no intention to sell, and I'm happy with how it turned out.

a different color from the VIN, yes you might take a hit on the ultimate value but not enough to bother me at least.

original paintwork on a car is negligible in a buying decision when mileage and mechanical condition always comes first.

Holy cows! That sounds like a lot of money. Did they need to do a lot of body work?
I got a quote a couple years ago to have my front bumper resprayed for $500. That included taking it off and fixing a couple of dings and having the license plate holes filled since I don't have a front plate. At the last minute I decided not to have them do it since I was worried about color match and then having to worry about getting rock chips on a freshly painted bumper...

$500.... did you know the shop owner? Maybe at Maaco... I'd love to see what a $500 paint job looked like!

Seriously though, I had several estimates from reputable shops in my area, and the front bumper work was $1400-$1800 at every single one of them. This included filling the reflector holes. If a shop quoted me $500 I'd be super leery... materials alone are several hundred.

And as mentioned in my initial post, prices will obviously vary by location and choice of shop.

Location may play a big part of it with labor rates. I would imagine areas like SF/NYC/LA to be way more expensive.

Here in Houston, the local exotic bodyshop (had a 765LT, LaFerrari, 993 Turbo, SL65 Black in the bay) quoted me $2.2k for bumper/hood/fenders. A “normal” shop would probably be $~1500-1700.
