I looked up the official part number (51.76-7140586-03) and still couldn't figure out the placement of it.

That looks like a moulding part that goes over the car body at around the edges maybe? 🤔

It sounds like you're in the ballpark, lol. I'll go to the parts yard tomorrow and look at the 3-series that are there.
