2012 wide tires?
just picked up my 2012 135i jet black/black. so far 25% tints, JB4, 10mm front spacers and 15mm rear spacers form burger tuning. ok so I am thinking of going with 285/30/18 tires in the rear on my stock 18 x 8.5 wheels and move the stock 245/35/18 rear tires to the front. by my calcualtions wheel diameters will be retained at 24.8 inches. I know, I know, 285 is too wide on a 8.5 inch stock wheels, but it can be done and would make for a mean look. the wheel spacers provide enough clearance inside the fenders (I also noticed better cornering with the wider wheel spacers) it will probably understeer more due to wider rear tires. has anyone every done this setup?

285 on a 8.5 wheel is way to excessive. Also depending on what tire you go with that will be out of there spec zone area or whatever they call it. I think that if you just got some better tires you would be happy with that. You would also have make sure you buy another run flats for the rear or it could throw things into wack. Car looks good and congrats on the purchase.

You are going to run into some serious problems in my opinion, and rubbing is going to be a major on, not on the inner side, but on the fender side

for those who said it couldn't be done... I did it. 285/30/18 in rear on stock 18x8.5 inch wheels with a 10mm spacer. looks great and fits fine. I moved the rear stock 245/35/18 to the front wheels on the stock 18.x7.5 inch wheels.. no rub in the front at all. rear 285's rubs very very rarely if I go over big bump, but well worth it. the car feels solidly planted on the road.

That is amazing, fitting such wide rubber on the stockers!
How are the fronts doing in terms of rubbing? Next time I go for a new set of tires I'm thinking of going 245 / 275's. I'm most worried about the fronts rubbing against the struts/fender, than going big in the rears (as you said 285's barely rub!). Could you tell me your fronts setup? Spacers? Brand of tires & Model? Your car looks so aggressive with the massive rubbers! |

it now has a plump butt similar to the 1M look in terms of wider fenders. So I moved the rear stock 245/35/18 runflats to the front wheels to save haivng to buy a new pair, no spacers and not rubbing at all in the front this is the largest you can go in the front though w/o rubbing. The rears are non runflat 285/30/18 on stock 8.5 inch wheels. I had a 10mm spacer on hand so I used it. but can use a 5mm spacer on the rears and have less rubbing on the outside fender. . I would say it rubs very little once a week if I go over a hard bump. I was warnd about mixing runflats and non runflats but it feels and handles great. I think you just have to make sure the tread pattern is similar on all matching tires.
here is the setup Front 245/35/18 on 18 x 7.5 wheel - no rubbing so far Rear 285/30/18 on 18 x 8.5 wheel (same 24.8 inch overall diamter like stock) with 10 mm BMS hub centric spacer ( you could easily use a 5 mm spacer also) very slight rub once a week or so. I used this awsome wheel/tire size calculator http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp to stay identical to stock diameter. |

Indeed, nothing wrong with experimenting but performance-wise you're not looking at much of an improvement, if any even.. I think ride height and additional suspension work would improve your handling much more than tires at this point.
But damn.. those tires are FATTT..

here are more pictures of the 285/30/18 rear tires on stock 18 x 8.5 inch wheels with 10 mm BMS hub centric spacer. true, suspension tuning would do wonders but it's a leased car so can't spend too much.. Wheel spacers are cheap and do widen the track and cause slight negative camber for better stance on corners.

so after a week of driving on 245/35/18 run flats up front, and 285/30/18 non runflats rear, I decided to make a change. the 285/30/18 rears are fine. I don't like the way the 245/35/18 run flats feel up front, they feel heavy, very harsh over bumps and I feel more resistence when accelerating. so I decided to go non run flat stock size 225/40/18 up front with a 15mm BMS wheel spacer to widen the track.
the wider track using wheel spacers is a must for 1 series owners I think - both for looks and handeling. I used the BMS wheel spacers and very happy. you could easily go 15mm front and 15mm rear on stock tires/wheels. Last edited by rezvanf; 08-22-2012 at 07:45 PM.. |

update....
after on the 285/30/18 rears for a few weeks, they feel heavy and motor seems to need more effort to spin up the rear wheels. so I replaced rears with 255/35/18's. and I like this setup better. the rear tires now feels more responsive. the weight of the tire definitly had an influence. so now I have 225/40/18 up front with 15mm spacers and 255/35/18 on the rear with 15mm spacers. I think this is the optimal setup of tire sizes on stock wheels.
