How long did it take them to be able to explain the rational behind this? I waited over 5 weeks for the short explanation that "My car shouldn't have it because it wasn't built after Oct 2011." but I truly feel that the people I spoke with did not have a clue as to why it wasn't installed. If you have any additional information / articles which you could send it would be great. Thanks so much. I truly feel this is a big blunder by BMW but it does not look like I can do much about it.

This is definitely going back in time, and I remember the whole issue of some cars coming with the oil cooler and others not and it not being very clear which had them and which one did not and the reason behind it. I have a production date of 10/06 and sport package and M6 and I have it and I know there were people in with 07 production dates which did not have have it. I know people were running into oil temp issues and arguing with BMWNA about why they car did not have the oil cooler.
So the statement about before 10/11 is not true since there are plenty of pre 2011 cars with the oil cooler, may that statement is about x-drive cars, maybe that was the factor, you could have the sport and such but if you had an x-drive you did not get the oil-cooler for some reason. Also as it was pointed out, MT6 had it at least in the early days and the AT6 did not, that could be the other issue, but I thought BMW did start putting them in AT6 prior to 2011 due to all the complaints. I'm just happy I have the wherewithal to take one for the little guys team. You'll note that I still drive BMW's. So we are all happy. I love the engineering and integration of the damn things, they are still the best of the daily drivers out there IMO. I just dislike the bean counters that surround the technology, which is probably why they dropped the cooler from the automatic...

I have 2011 335-x with M Pkg, 06/11 and it didn't come with the oil cooler, it wasn't installed on x-drives. No big deal, the PPK isn't worth it anyways. I installed COBB and will probably install and aftermarket oil cooler soon.

- I mentioned I won't install COBB/JB4 cause of warranty and CPO concerns. I only wanted the PPK as I want to ensure the 3 years left of warranty would be retained. - Some xDrive owners do actually have an oil cooler. It thought you needed to have just M-Sport and 18in Wheels & Summer Tires. But it appears that you also have to have 6MT and not 6AT. The one person who replied actually sued BMW over this (unfortunately unsuccessfully).

Random question... by chance did you go to Aruba two years ago? While my wife and I were on a Jeep excursion we met a car enthusiast and his wife from your area who said he owned a number of cars including a lot of BMWs. Just curious as your said you spent $300K - would be a small world

So what would happen if started going into limp mode all the time. How would they fix it???
If you started driving fast to get it into limp mode maybe, just maybe they would have to install a oil cooler to fix it. |

2009 335i coupe with factory M-sport kit. I have oil cooler, and oil cooler lines routed to the oil filter housing. I also believe my friends 335i standard sport package 2009 sedan, has the oil cooler as well.
as the years go by, BMW like any other car manufacturers will start removing parts to reduce cost and increase profit. In the 1st year, cars have the most bug. 2nd and 3 year are the best as they are likely to include all the fixes and recall. 5th and 6th years is where they screw people over and take out standard features or make you pay for it. |

I read through your entire blog because I was interested in the outcome and I just wanted to pass on my sympathies. I am sure you've become victim to the beancounters and that always sucks.
I am sure any BMW engineer made your argument during the development. Cheers |

2011 e90 w/xdrive, msport, 6AT, 18" summers and the increased speed limit option and I have the oil cooler. Build date of 4/11 so the only difference I can see is e90 vs e92, which doesn't make any sense.

Very interesting - would you mind sending the last 7 of your VIN (you can PM me) so that I can use that as reference when I speak with BMWNA once again?

So what exactly are you expecting them to do? Install an oil cooler on a car you bought used, that was built 3 years ago, without the oil cooler option? Just because you have the prerequisites doesn't always mean you get the actual item. Next time research the car more before buying it...

Thanks for your input. And I did do research - according to BMWs literature my car should have received the Oil Cooler - I can't find anywhere (even from BMW) a stated reason why my vehicle should not have had the Oil Cooler installed when manufactured. Yes, it was my mistake/failure to not physically check when I picked the car up from the dealership.

And yes, you should get the item if you meet the prerequisites. BMW states that if you have an xDrive, M-Sport, and 18in Wheel Package you get the S840 option with Oil Cooler. If it isn't a mistake, it is unethical for them to just decide to not include it for some vehicles and not others without any explanation or reason why.

If it ins't listed on the build sheet what grounds do you have to stand on to justify making them install it. To me thats like stating your car came with halogens, but others made in the same year, that are also lets say, blue, have xenons. Then asking BMW where are my xenons and when are you installing them? Good luck.

To the OP, you know you can uninstall COBB in like 10 minutes when taking the car in for warranty work. It's software, so as long as you uninstall it they have no way of telling you were tuned.
