MAF Error Codes: 102E11/102A32

On my 2015 M4 I have the mods outlined below. I have replaced both MAF sensors (Bosch units from FCP Euro) but continue to get the 102E11 DME code as well as 102A32 (attached screenshot).

VRSF Charge Pipes
VRSF Intercooler
RK Tune Front Mount Intakes
OTS Tune from MHD (have tried Stage 0/1/2 with no change in behavior)
O-Rings replaced on both Turbo Inlets at the time Front Mount Intakes were installed

Smoke tested BOTH intakes with No visible leaks

And the car performs as expected, no idle issues and no issues under throttle.

I'm at a loss as to where I go next

I had similar issues, it was my front mount intakes.

The car idled terribly during cold starts, sometimes killing out completely. Once it was warm and running it drove great, no issues. I had everything smoke tested, no leaks. Switched back to my VRSF intakes under the hood- idle issues and air mass/lean codes went away. Not sure if it's simply the positioning of the MAFs on the front intakes or what, but my M4 tuned with BM3 Stage 2 really didn't like them.

gcant35 thank you for the reply! What has me SO confused is the 102E11, which we interpreted as a clear sensor failure. But since BOTH MAF sensors we're replaced we didn't know where to go next.

Can I ask what Front Mount intakes you installed? That were giving you problems? And what VRSF intakes you went with?

Since I had to modify the internal plastic parts of the grill to fit the RK Tunes intakes I'd like to stay with front mount if possible but I fear I'll have the same issue. It could be the placement of the MAF sensor in the RK intakes. I'm going to reach out to CenCal performance describing our exact situation. Maybe get some confidence from them that it can/will work given the current mods. These RK Intakes weren't cheap and if I stay with front mount I'm taking a second gamble.

UPDATE: CenCal did respond, they have NO reported issues using the Front Mount Intake Kit in combination with a BM3 Stage 1 tune.

Mike

Also, if anyone can point me to ANY information on diagnosing the wiring harness side of the MAF sensors it would be greatly appreciated. Anything, voltage readings, ohm readings, anything that give me some confidence the wiring harness side is OK. I've seen some diagnostics online where technician pack pin the wiring harness side of the sensor, doesn't look like that's possible on the BMW connector. I've also captured some data logs using the MHD app, nothing conclusive from the data logs.

One additional question, I have a theory that the extremely high volume of air in the front mount intakes cools the MAF so quickly that it masquerades as a low voltage electrical issue. Does this sound plausible? The low voltage / bad MAF has really thrown me, I keep looking for electrical issues.

Does it come back on immediately or does it pop up every couple thousand miles?

Info@mad-us.com there doesn't seem to be a pattern for when the codes return. Sometimes it's on the first drive after clearing codes. Sometimes its a day or so. My guess is, it may be due to how hard/easy you are on the car. Also, I don't always get the CEL. The MHD app often shows both codes but NO CEL for another day or so.

I did have a local BMW specialist scan the car. His first thought was a ground issue given the electrical MAF error code. But he cleared codes, started the car and the code did NOT immediately return so he ruled out systemic electrical issue. Because of the mods we had on the car plus the stage 2 tune he said "it's not really in my wheel house" but he was kind enough to scan the car to confirm what I'm seeing in the MHD app.
