Biggest tire size for 328 sportline

I plan on changing out the run flats with Michelin PSS, and I was wondering what the widest size is I could run on stock rims without any rubbing issues?

Thanks!

Which stock rims? Size? I'm guessing 18x8.5?

You could safely do 235, maybe 245 even. Could always have them mount the tires just to take a look at how the sizes look. Some may not mind 245s while others may say it's too much tire for a 8.5" wheel.

If 245 was too much why would bmw sell their vehicles with 255 tire on a 8.5? My car with the 401's are 19x8 225/40 and 19x8.5 255/35 and the tire looks perfectly fine. But the OP needs to provide more info on what wheels his car came with if he wants any help.

I was just stating my opinion based on the tires my car came with on the stock 18" square setup with the sportline and my aftermarket staggered 19" setup. Not an expert here obviously. (Edit: I think my stock sportline wheels may actually be 8" and not 8.5" like the staggered setup, but someone may need to chime in. If that's true then I would've said 245 would fit and 255 would probably fit, but that's neither here nor there - I'm no wheel expert regardless, just happen to have looked at a few setups and have a tire size calculator handy)

My OEM setup was 225 which is a 8.9" wide tire. 235 is 9.3" so I figured that would still fit (it's what I'm using on my aftermarket 9" wheels and doesnt seem to have stretching, although I've seen people also use 245 on 9" wheels). 245 is 9.7" which I was guessing could still fit even though the tire is 1"+ more than the wheel width.

Maybe 255 fit fine on a 8.5" wheel, but they are 10" wide and also fit on 10" wheels. I'm running 265 on my 10" rear wheels which are 10.4", but have seen 275s on those.

Like I said, choose what you think looks best, there seems to be a wide range of what can 'fit' a given wheel width. If bmw puts both 225 (8.9" tires) and 255 (10") tires on the same 8.5" wheel (I suspect the 255s may be on a different wheel though) then go for it if you like the look.

OEM 397's are 8x18" ET34.

245 will look great on those wheels, 245/45-18 or 245/40-18 depending on if you want slightly taller or shorter diameter compared to stock.

You made it seem like running a 255 would not be safe. And I dont see why bmw would equip their cars with unsafe tire sizes. And as far as looks go, the tire does not bulge out or anything, it sits nicely. And BMW does not run a 225 on a 8.5" wheel. 225 is a little stretched on a 8.5" (looks nice) but is slightly stretched. Bmw uses 225's on a 8" wide wheels.
Edit: Just for reference how a 255 tire looks on a 8.5" wheel (not my car)

this car has 255's all around

I just put 245/40/18s on my 18x8 square wheels, looks fine, no rubbing of any kind. Wouldn't try going past 245 on 8 wheels though, if you have 8.5 you can prob go for 255 or go a staggered setup.

Maybe I had a poor choice of words. I meant safe from a standpoint that there would be no issue of stretching/bulging/rubbing/whatever and from a mostly visual standpoint. Not to be confused with them being a safety hazard and potentially causing an accident or explosion.

I'm sure you could probably run 275s and not have drastic safety impacts on the wheel (whether it rubs that may be another issue entirely).

I think if you went staggered, and used aftermarket wheels (like 9" up front 10" out back), you could get away with 245/265.

I'm curious to know as well what our cars can "fit" on non-standard wheels.

on my current 8 and 8.5, 225/255 fits fine....
