Diesel stutter on accelaration

I've just traded in my E90 318i and bought a 2007 X3 2.0d (M47 engine, I know it's the same as some earlier E90 diesel engines hence reason for posting in this section). I was promised by the dealer that it would be fully serviced before I picked it up, however on the drive home I felt a slight juddering when sitting at 30mph in 4th gear and again under hard acceleration at around 4000 rpm in 3rd gear. Had a look at the engine, the oil looked pretty black and the air filter was filthy. I took it back to the dealer and asked them to check the juddering and to service it. They couldn't replicate the fault during a test drive but changed the air filter anyway.

It's still juddering though. I haven't checked the oil breather yet but do you think that this could be the cause?

Any other suggestions? I'm hoping it's not a potential turbo issue.

I think I have the same as you, driving along resting my foot in one spot it sometimes stutters but god knows why! I have another 7 months bmw warranty so I hope if it is going to fall it will!

But I have checked fault codes and nothing it's quite consistent but will let mine develop.

Is it a manual? If so I had the M47 engine before (it was a 1 series but same engine) and it had a juddering problem. It was the clutch and flywheel.

Yes its manual, got 1 year warranty. I was hoping it was simply choking a bit and new filters would do the trick but either turbo or clutch flywheel means a fight with the dealer! Juddering is very slight at the moment, actually hope it gets worse so dealer will repair it!

Mines an auto but it just like ignition has been cut very briefly! Hopefully it develops before the end of warranty!

I had juddering in 1st gear only, it is very common. The flywheel fails and becomes loose.
Bmw will know this so confront them!

The garage i bought the car from couldnt find the fault i descirbed but took it to a bmw specialist and he checked the software version and it hadnt been updated since the car was new. Hope he upgrades it to the 180bhp tune while he is at it. I 'think' the software for x3's was updated in 2008 so my car being a 07 would have missed it. it must not have been back to a bmw dealer since new. Should get the car back tommorrow hopefully stutter free!

That sounds pretty much like a DPF regeneration.
