2018 M3 C

Hi Everyone, i’m looking into getting an 18 F80 Comp in the next few days. What should i replace to safety of the engine to make it bullet proof because i heard that sometimes the crank hub and rod bearings go bad. What should i expect to pay to replace it and what else should i replace during that time!
Thanks in advance.

If these are real questions…

The s55 does NOT have a rod bearing issue. Check out Evolve’s rod bearings after 130k miles:

Spun crank hub is a concern if you believe a crankhub can slip. Price depends on which type of aftermarket CH you select and whether you use a CBC. VTT spline CH requires fewer hours to install compared to the 2-pin or 4-pin CHs. Hourly labor rates are different in different parts of the country so it’s hard to come up with an accurate estimate of part + labor. Total $3-5k?

Rear diff bushings are a common failure.

PCV also is a common failure after > ~50k miles.

TMIC can start to leak and the fluid goes right into the engine intake system.

Otherwise, F8x chassis and s55 engine have been really reliable. Other issues exist but they are not wide spread.

Rod bearings were an E9X issue. Nothing is failure proof.

I have 2019, beat the shit out of it, no problems. Just tire changes galore! No tunes, exhausts, or bolt on's though.

Take a XANAX, get the car, and stop worrying. But if you must, find a tuner shop and pay them a few large to drill out your crank shaft and hope everything goes back together properly.

Crank hub is an overblown issue. The BMW M4 GTS and GT4 racecar doesn’t even use an upgraded crank hub. When I asked my mechanic if I should do a pinned one, he said he doesn’t recommend it unless the original one fails. He does more Valve covers on the F80 than Crankhub jobs lol. FCP Euro or ECS this part. You’ll know you’ll need a valve cover once your car sounds like a tea kettle at idle and low speeds lol.

Rod bearings is not a common issue on this car either.

If you want to prevent one prevalent issue it’s the TMIC. It tends to leak into the engine. You can get a Wagners or Mishimoto. CSF is known to reduce performance. However if you get a TMIC from FCP Euro, it’s half the cost of a Wagners or Mishimoto and it’s a lifetime replacement. Once you see it like bone dry empty, I wouldn’t bother filling it back up. Just go straight replacement at that point. If a little coolant is missing it’s fine.

Rod bearings for S55 are not a problem. BMW repair shops (at least the one near me who lied about needing brakes at 20k) will try to sell you on it but there is a reason there is no mention of it on this forum

Consensus on crank hub is don’t worry about it unless you’re pushing some pretty big numbers. Can give you peace of mind though if you really want. I won’t do crankhub unless I upgrade turbos (stage 1 at the moment and it’s plenty friggin fast)

These cars are pretty damn reliable if you keep up with them. Be easy on the throttle until oil is up to temp and let it rip, it’s what they’re made for.
