F30 Jerking Forward
Hey everyone just wanted your input on a jerking issue i have been facing. my 2015 328i has been experiencing some jerking issues (feels like someone is hitting my car from the back) when i drive it at very low speeds (very congested road with traffic, frequent 10mph accelerations and stops. I was wondering if this is normal. I notice that when i am in traffic and the car is rolling around 5 mph and i apply gentle acceleration the car hesitates for a second or so and has the jerk. Is this something that is common with your F30's ? The jerks feel almost as if some gear is catching on and i fear i may be causing some harm by driving it.
Any feedback would be much appreciated. |

It happens to me once in a while when acceleration from a dead stop with very gentle throttle (parking lot). Usually it happens when the car is cold.
Now, if that can be repeated on demand, then you probably need to bring it in. If it just happens randomly once in a while... it is normal, especially in traffic or when the car is cold. It has to do with your throttle input. |

its normal, and it depends on your throttle input.
at low speed, practise applying the throttle differently. there is a sweet spot where it will shift smoothly at 1500rpm in the first 1-2 gears, and then there is a throttle position that will cause it to jump fairly violently. as for low speed rolling and then getting back onto the throttle, be gently and tip into the throttle slowly so the transmission doesnt rush the downshift. therefore, it will be smooth. |

I'm assuming you are on automatic since you have a 328i xDrive listed in your profile. If you are on a manual transmission this can occur quite often in low gears if you suddenly lift off the accelerator. The same thing could occur in an automatic too if you are accelerating and suddenly lift off the accelerator pedal, your body is still under the acceleration force and inertia is making you lunge forward in your seat before you catch yourself from the sudden reduction in speed.

I think what you are describing is different than OP is talking about.
What he is experiencing is hard shift at low speed from 1st to 2nd in Auto. The car sometimes does not shift when you expect it to shift in 1st... then when it does shift to 2nd, it's a pretty hard shift. It has to do with the way you apply the throttle. Perfectly normal. |

Thanks for the feedback. I am not fully able to replicate this on demand. I am driving in comfort mode. Also noticed that it happens more often in rainy conditions too possibly related to the automated xdrive ? I warm my car up for about 3 minutes on cold starts. Is there any I dictation to warm it up more ?

Same here...when engine is cold and I don't wait for it to warm up...it happens to me, but not every time.

I used to experience what you describe for the first couple years, but it's much less frequent now. I remember being stuck in stop and go traffic once and my wife actually got motion sickness from the jerking back and forth. Switching to eco mode will help a little bit. Other than that, being excrutiatingly gentle on the gas also helps. Hopefully over time your car's behavior will settle down too. Or maybe a software update somewhere along the line fixed it, I have no idea. It's maddeningly annoying behavior; this is my 5th BMW and the only one that's ever acted like that. The low-speed behavior is still sometimes annoying, but not to the same level as before. |

I think i have experienced weird shifting in every car i have owned if i were to drive off immediately when the car was cold.
Even my manual cars feel "weird" in the morning. It just takes some times to warm up. Not just the engine but you know the whole car with lubes and stuff. |

I know this is a really old post, and maybe your aren't monitoring it anymore, but i have this same issue currently with my 2015 328i. Cold start jerking from dead start, and jerking when I begin to brake and end up having to accelerate before coming to a complete stop. It does feel as though it's a 1st to 2nd gear shift issue. Were you ever able to get yours resolved with a software update or the like?

Hi,
I'm from Indonesia. I'm have BMW F30 328i N20 2012. A while ago i've found some problem with my car, when i'm out of corner at low speed i feel some jerk at low speed. The speed around 10-20 km/h. When running at high speed there is no problem. Also when i'm brake on traffic light, sometimes the car hasn't stop completely, i feel some jerk and suddenly engine off and there is notification "auto start/stop function deactived. gear box positition P not engaged!" Does anyone have same problem like this? My car already check in dealer for 7days but they still not found the problem. Edit =================== the dealer already check the engine coil, spark plug, change new battery, check alternator, crankshaft. all in goo condition Last edited by boom89; 07-16-2019 at 02:32 AM.. |

Same thing happens to me.
But like other people have said, usually happens on a cold start. Not all the time. Usually low speeds. Happens mostly when pulling out of my driveway and work parking lot. |

Ok that’s weird I have a automatic 2014 328i and mine has only been happening recently. It only happens when the car is warmed up and I’m in sports mode. I never had this issue, I’ve had the car for a year. Every time I get on the pedal it kicks. Happens in comfort slightly too.

But that's the thing i know what your probably talking about how the car will jerk from time to time but this feels like misfiring but my car isn't misfiring . I've checked my whole ignition system and changed spark plugs like a month ago with no problems. This "jerking" feeling just started a week ago.
