I've replaced my oil filter housing gasket about 4 years ago and just last weekend I replaced my valve cover gasket. The valve cover gasket is a pain in the butt, but ECS Tuning has excellent DIY instructions in PDF. Now it looks like I've got a coolant line leaking on my rear turbo, which is causing white smoke or steam from that area. It puffs white smoke for about 3 to 5 seconds ever 20 or 30 seconds, even after I've shut the engine off. That's the electric water pump doing what it's supposed to, in order to cool the turbos, even after the car has been shut down and lasts for several minutes usually. Anyway, I'm struggling with how I'm going to tackle that job or if I should just take it to my trusted independent shop. My turbos were replaced under that 82k mile warranty at about 80 miles. Now I'm at 128k miles. Everything else is working perfectly though.

Well it is! Lol! I meant the thermostat...
While we're talking about thermostats... these BMW t-stats are just a poor design, in my opinion. I wish it were the normal $15 part that just inserts between the upper coolant hose and the engine that takes like 15 minutes to swap. Not only that, the t-stat is fully encased in a hard plastic casing with way too many complicated parts and fittings that don't look like they're built to last.

I know my thermostat also gave me a code like a year before water pump died Code was "stuck open thermostat" at least when these go bad they are designed to remain open and not closed... |

The previous owner replaced the water pump and thermostat on my 2008 335i at a local dealership January 2015 (70,000 miles) for a total of $1174.04 plus tax ($638.54 for parts and $535.50 for labor).

I would say that is exemplary and outstanding price for a dealership. I'm surprised. My friend was quoted on his 2009 528xi E60 n52 (same engine and exactly same layout for thermostat/water-pump) $2600+ for parts and labor at his local NY (Long Island) dealership

I'm thinking ordering the kit and keep it in trunk if the worst case scenario comes - just head straight to repair shop in limp mode Last edited by WhiteBeard; 12-04-2016 at 05:04 PM.. |

Yeah I thought the same thing. As for the DIY, I just don't want to
