2008 335i with oil cooler, manual transmission. Radiator fans were running like crazy. Took it to Bert's in Santa Ana, CA. Cost me $941 for water pump only. It worries me a bit that he didn't replace the thermostat since after the work was done I researched that the water pump comes off then the thermostat. Other repairs: high pressure fuel pump (three times); low pressure fuel sensor; oil filter housing gasket. I am original owner and baby the car. What's next?
I was getting shadow codes for a failing thermostat for about a year before my water pump finally died one day. I researched prices on internet sources and found the best deal at a local BMW dealership and picked up the water pump and thermostat. I did the job myself, which was a pain because there's like 7 hoses attached to those parts. The water pump is attached directly to the water pump, so it's best to change them both anyway and they're both prone to failure over time.

I've replaced my oil filter housing gasket about 4 years ago and just last weekend I replaced my valve cover gasket. The valve cover gasket is a pain in the butt, but ECS Tuning has excellent DIY instructions in PDF.

Now it looks like I've got a coolant line leaking on my rear turbo, which is causing white smoke or steam from that area. It puffs white smoke for about 3 to 5 seconds ever 20 or 30 seconds, even after I've shut the engine off. That's the electric water pump doing what it's supposed to, in order to cool the turbos, even after the car has been shut down and lasts for several minutes usually. Anyway, I'm struggling with how I'm going to tackle that job or if I should just take it to my trusted independent shop. My turbos were replaced under that 82k mile warranty at about 80 miles. Now I'm at 128k miles. Everything else is working perfectly though.

Well it is! Lol! I meant the thermostat...
While we're talking about thermostats... these BMW t-stats are just a poor design, in my opinion. I wish it were the normal $15 part that just inserts between the upper coolant hose and the engine that takes like 15 minutes to swap. Not only that, the t-stat is fully encased in a hard plastic casing with way too many complicated parts and fittings that don't look like they're built to last.

I know bud... just giving you a hard time...

I know my thermostat also gave me a code like a year before water pump died Code was "stuck open thermostat" at least when these go bad they are designed to remain open and not closed...

The previous owner replaced the water pump and thermostat on my 2008 335i at a local dealership January 2015 (70,000 miles) for a total of $1174.04 plus tax ($638.54 for parts and $535.50 for labor).

I would say that is exemplary and outstanding price for a dealership. I'm surprised. My friend was quoted on his 2009 528xi E60 n52 (same engine and exactly same layout for thermostat/water-pump) $2600+ for parts and labor at his local NY (Long Island) dealership

1. Driving down I-5 highway. Engine temperature light comes on. Yellow. 10 seconds later, it turns Red. Limp Mode.
2. I turn back and go to near-by BMW dealership. They topped off the coolant. They said it was very low.
3. Got back on the highway, engeine temperature light comes on. Yellow. Then Red. Limp mode.
4. Had to drive couple miles and parked. Cooled down, start the engine. Same thing happens. I shut off.
5. An hour later, I try to start the car, and battery was dead.

According to some research I've done, it seems like its the electric water pump failure. My questions are,

1. Did I damage anything else? Which components can be potentially damaged due to failed water pump?
2. How large is my repair bill going to be?

I already spent $600 towing the damn car back home and to the dealership.
If I'm looking at $1000+ repair bill, I'm selling this car.
Drives: fast around corners. maybe thats why your water pump failed?

a waterpump will not set you back $1000. my friend had his replaced for $400.

Dude, back in 2012 (when OP posted I mean) it was expensive but I agree that now it's much cheaper. Kit sells for $370 (pump, thermostat, coolant and bolts). Tho labor is still a good 4 hours (at least) and damn repair shops still charge $90/h where I am

I'm thinking ordering the kit and keep it in trunk if the worst case scenario comes - just head straight to repair shop in limp mode

if the engine overheats on your way to the shop, you should probably have a head gasket handy as well.

Where can you buy a kit that includes the pump, thermostat, bolts, and coolant for $370? I thought I did good and spent about $415, but that's with an aftermarket OEM pump (gates/continental).

I believe so, however, since I don't work for either company it's a bit hard to say for sure.

That's a GREAT price! Water pump + T-stat job on my 335 was $1200 (indy shop).
