Internet connection keeps on disconnecting! Help PLease

Comcast is our internet provider. We have a NetGear router. And one laptop PC with wireless network. The most frutrating thing happens with the wireless internet conneciton though. Every other time we us the computer, the wireless network connection disconnects. Could this be automatic updates, firewall settings, router, provider or possible even PC settings?

The only way to fix this is to plug in the cable to the router. And screw around with the settings. And repeatedly plug and unplug the wire until the wire internet connection re-establishes. And then finally I can select wireless again, and it is connected via wireless.

So bottom line. This is a major pain to have to do every other time we use the internet. WTF! Help please, ideas, suggestions?

THanks guys

If the problem only arises with the wireless connection, your wireless router might be transmitting in the same channel as one of your neighbors. Most routers by default use channel 6. Use the router's configuration utility to switch to a different channel (you should be able to choose from channel 1 to channel 14).

OK thanks. Good call. I have tired that. I have switched between channel 09 and 11 many times. Still no fix. Anyone have other ideas?

The same exact thing happens to me I'm running wireless as well and I keep disconnecting/reconnecting myself. But I don't have to do it every time I use the internet happens like maybe once or twice a week.

So what are your router & firewall settings? Sounds like you are experiencing a similar prob - but less frequently

It's the Wireless Zero Configuration Service. You probably have another wireless service manager that is conflicting with the WZC service.

you need to choose 1 to use, WZC or the one provided with your wifi card.

It could be your internet provider. Now, the same thing happened to me about 8-9 years ago when I started using cable internet and DSL. It happened about 10 times a day! It drove me nuts and it seems that they totally fix the problem pretty much for my provider right now. It just happens about 1-3 times a month for me now.

Since you've already tried changing channels, the problem is most likely with your router. Have a friend/family member bring over their router and test it with your modem and computer.

If you need to buy a new router... get the Linksys WRT54GL and flash the firmware with DDWRT's latest release.

Also you may want to try updating the firmware on your Netgear router, this may alleviate the issue.

Good luck, let us know how it works out.

The only phones in our apt are cell phones. Thanks

Try this first: (Assuming you have Windows XP)

http://paininthetech.com/2005/10/25/...in-windows-xp/

If it doesn't solve your issue then contact your ISP.

If you have Windows Vista, it's going to be an uphill battle. I had to go out and buy a new wireless card because the one I initially got was not Windows approved. Now it only happens sometimes. . .I'll be pulling some network cable thru the ceiling this week probably. . .

It may, but since OP's wired computer stays up, gotta think it's either the Netgear router or the wireless card. didn't catch which wireless card is installed. . .

You are very lucky to not know of the horrors of Vista... when you do see it, run and hide

(seriously though.. its the newest version of windows... Windows Vista... )

I was gonna say, if your laptop is running Windows Vista, disable all the ipv6 stuff from your network card settings, it screws with some routers... I've had this happen a few times, and disabling ipv6 fixed it.

Also try forcing your router into "B Only" mode, instead of B+G, or whatever it defaults to... this will force everything to use the same protocol.
