How long does n54 last?
Usually how long does a n54 car last. Bought my car as a CPO around 50k now I'm near 93k....but I always keep up with my maintenance.

Mines dying at 90k, torn coolant pipes, oil leaks from multiple places and smoking turbos atm (Replaced at around 55k I believe). but would still run like a champ if I keep shelling out for it.

Also keep in mind, what the car has been through will also dictate what is to come maintenance wise, be it weather, quality of fuel, regular track usage etc...
There is some known issues that all n54 owners have to live with and expect (HPFP, fuel pump, Vanos solenoids etc...). All in all, if you take care of it, it will take care of you, for the most part |

My 2006 335i is on 190,000 miles still on original clutch and turbos, never had any major issues, never broken down at roadside, does not use much oil. Planning to keep it for another 50,000 miles, will fit some new turbos soon.

The n54 will last a long time IMO. What will determine whether it will be worth to keep will be dependent on how long the supporting parts last and your willingness to fix them.

what's up with that, ppl tell me "I am afraid to own it above 50K because the motor is so stressed" WTH is wrong with ppl......lol At 8lbs of boost from the factory the motor is basically hibernating waiting to be awaken. 140K+ Been tuned since single digits back in 2007, turbo tuner, JB Hot pills, XEDE which then became Procede, JB4, Back to Procede Rev 3 E85 Aggressive on stock turbos FBO....430 RWHP not a peep. So yeah....I LOVE THIS MOTOR...! Major mtc so far: ~ Dealer replaced turbos by themselves at 44K due to wastegate rattle, software upg didn't help ~ Clutch @ 98K ~ Waterpump @ 122K ~ Fuelpump changed to 933 part pump @ 63K has been perfectly fine eversince, loves E85 Mix that's it.

So many people have told me what a piece of shit my car is. How every person they know has had MAJOR issues.
i tell them that other than oil filter housing gasket (covered under my CPO) I have had nothing go wrong. I get either "just wait" or "you are a lucky one" |

Its not the engine that is the issue. The N54 engine is bulletproof. It is the accessories attached to the engine. Water pump, coolant lines, turbos, gaskets etc that are always breaking down.

I "think" they'll survive out to 200K miles, and I'm hoping that's so with mine. I also think I wouldn't recommend buying one that's not accompanied by CPO protection because it's the model that's prone to having pricey fixes become necessary. So, I think of the 335i as the kind of car that if you have one and it's going strong, keep it and enjoy it for it'll serve you well. However, the time is fast approaching where buying a used one will become a rich man's indulgence (due to maintenance and repair cost being potentially high) rather than a budget conscious person's way to have some fun at a sensible price.
All the best.

This question has far too many variables. And honestly, I don't even see where mods makes that big of a difference. As long as your tune is on point and you are not doing anything stupid, 99% of the time, you are using the N54 as a low-compression NA engine, which should last 300, 400 or even 500K.
From everything I have read, there are no internal weak spots with these engines, just weak peripherals. As long as you replace those when needed, the engine should last as long as any on the road. |
