What about passengers in the back seat, though? Or if you have more than two non-bottled drinks?

But, the E93 had a pop up cup holder that occupied what would normally be a small storage tray in the rear center console. I believe some folks were able to retrofit this cup holder into the E92 since the two consoles were otherwise the same.

The new M3/M4 specific seats do not provide cup holders for rear passengers. For the F80/F82, there is no fold down armrest so that wasn't an option to accommodate a cup holder. The F80 also does not have a center console obviously, while the F82 center console just has a tray. In theory it should be possible to put a cup holder in that tray but there is no OEM part so it would be custom. With such a solution in mind, it might even be possible to retrofit the F82 console to an F80, though I somewhat doubt it would be doable without major custom work. And would anyone want to give up the center seat for that?

For the F83, it shares its seats with the series car and there is a pop up cup holder in the console as there was with the E93. However, unlike with the E92/E93, the rear center console area in the F82/F83 are not the same, so retrofitting these cup holders to the coupe would not be possible (without custom work).
My E92 had cup holders that popped out of the arm rest that folded from the seats in the back.

In that case, I can understand. But I have passengers taking up the back seat(s) fairly frequently and not having cupholders back there can definitely be a PITA, haha.

I was talking about the E92 M3 specifically. The E92 3 Series did have the fold down center console with cup holders, yes.

Yes it would be nice if you could fit the cup holder from the vert in the back and the extending thigh support in the front seats while I'm at it lol

This solution wouldn't work for you. We use the rear seat belts to secure this thing, it would be a PITA to have to unbuckle, move it to get passengers in the seats. Once they're in, no way to secure it. Our DD is a 2015 Chevy Trax. That little crossover has more cup holders than a movie theater.

So I got the Sportline Backseat Storage with Cupholders

BMW Part #52212219904

It is the "Sportline" Model…there are three different lines, much like the floor mats. One is red, one is black, and one is tan (accents), so if you are ordering, make sure you get the color you want.

This is supposed to be red, but it matches the SO interior pretty much spot on.

Only complaint is that it blocks the straight-line air coming out of the vents. It does not go all the way up to the vents. There is about 2-3" of space left, so air will flow, but backseat passengers will not be able to get direct airflow.

It is a neat addition. We were on a road trip about a month ago, and my younger son (16) complained that he had nowhere to put his bottle of water. He was holding it between his feet.

So after reading this thread, I ordered one…got it from Amazon. Here are some pics. It secures well in the back with the center seatbelt, plus with the attached strap, it makes into a nice "go" bag for a day-trip.

Works for my two older sons, and I like the fact that you can remove it if you have a fifth person.

Dude... Cooled seats are the ONLY option available on the F10 that wasn't available on the F80 that I REALLY REALLY wanted. Jumping in a car mid-summer-day in New Orleans is a shockingly uncomfortable ordeal, especially when your bare legs hit the leather. (I'm in a kilt a startlingly large percentage of the time.) And, no multi-hour highway trip happens without a sweaty back in the summer.

Either circumstance would make some cooler-than-ambient air from the seats a welcome addition. Too bad it's noisy and heavy as all heck.

Looks cool, but it looks like it partially blocks the rear A/C vents.

Obviously, I fly that distance when I need to rather than drive, but the scale is important, and should illustrate that the distance the average American drives is probably significantly higher than the average European.

Point is, it's not generally a 5 minute trip when we go ANYWHERE. So, there is always a consideration for taking refreshment, and cupholders are key to safely holding a bottle of water or soda. Now I realize that we have also created an in-car fast food culture that has us used to bringing food into the car any old time, but I think that's not really the genesis of the need for cupholders.
I understand your point, but there is a huge cultural difference too. We find it easy to stop, drink, and then continue our trip.

I think it's because it is hard to find a drink so big as they serve everywhere in the states, and as a result we are stuck with inferior bladders.

I did mention that in my post...

So far no one riding in the back has complained though!

No worries buddy. I was merely pointing it out so that you know it's a matter of fact vs. that of speculation.

That said, this is a complicated solution... as you'll only want to use the cupholders when you have rear seat passengers. Which is also the only time you'd really care about rear seat ventilation as well.

Agreed...I live in Central FL, and it is pretty hot when you first get in and the car has been sitting out for a few hours. It only takes a few minutes for the inside temp to average out though, so not a big deal with my passengers so far!

Any adult riding in the back of a M3 or M4 should consider it an honor AND privilege. Thus, they should NOT complain about not having a cupholder.

Additionally the driver should not feel bad about the lack of cupholders. Again this is because you are doing your passengers a favor by allowing them to ride in your awesome beastly machine.

On second thought they do have cup holders...the have 3...two hands and one set of thighs.

Holy shite I'm glad I read this thread before my m3 goes into production. Canceling order stat!! Honestly though, I'll always be driving so why do I care about those losers in the back having a cup holder?? They'll be too busy trying not to puke.

My wife drank soda in my 335..once..

We bought this one and took it for our 3 week euro delivery. My 12 year old used it as a backpack to store his books, tablet etc. and of course, drinks holder. On long trips, he stacked some clothing on top to steal naps. We drove over 6000 Kms, safe to say there were a few long drives in the mix.

It's stupid that the designers kept the split folding rear seats for practicality reasons, but couldn't engineer a damn armrest with cupholders.

The BMW storage thing is well built, has a rubberized back so it doesn't slip around, and is reasonably sized. But yes, it partially blocks the vents. In any case, it will transfer to another car so it's not wasted $.

No rear cup holders in the M3

Had the car for 2 mths now, but rarely have rear seat passengers.

Just realized there are no rear cup holders??

I think it's a pretty big oversight, especially for the M3. I can see skipping it maybe on the M4, but a 4 door sedan should have them.
