Not Impressed With Audi S5
Hello all, its been a while since I posted on here, but just wanted to let you know of a recent experience I had. I went to the audi dealership today to take a look at the S5, and to see how it compared to my 2011 335 coupe. The SA brought out a beautiful white S5 with black napa interior, and i'm not going to lie, I liked the look a lot more than my 335. He pulled it out of the dealership, let me get in, and introduced me to the various components of the interior. I found the navigation system to be very complicated, there were to many switches here and there, and the overall look of the interior was too "busy" for my taste. Upon driving my initial reactions were that the steering was incredibly loose, the pickup was terrible, yet the handling was quite planted with the quattro system. The thing that really annoyed me was the pickup of this car. In third gear I floored it, and expected to be thrust into the back of my seat...yet it seemed like the car was in fifth or sixth gear to be honest. The exhaust note was deep, but honestly when revved to the higher RPMs it sounded like someone was farting. I am so happy that I decided to buy my 335 over this "competition". The 335 is so much tighter, more user friendly, and overall a much better car. Just thought I would share

Never driven an S5, but just the looks of that car beats out the 335 hands down. Its gorgeous IMO, the new Quattro thats supposed to be coming out soon too is a stunner. Audi definitely has their aesthetic design elements nailed.

I like that Audi is striving, new models, good looks, pushing that motor further back with each new generation. BMW is surprising, seems like each new car looks worse that the generation it's replacing, price more than 5k more and features removed. At some point, even the strong brand image won't help. BMW is like a giant who fell asleep. Looking forward to the new 6 series, maybe it's the new model that's nicer that its predecessor.

I live next door to a Audi and BMW and a Mercedes dealer, and know some the guys at each as walk by everyday and we chat about cars here and there, in fact from my condo on the 25th floor, I can look down and see all the new cars from all makes, plus Honda, parked on their roofs of the buildings.
When the S5 came out, before I bought the 335i a year ago, I took a A5 and a S5 out for a spin with a salesman, and the A5 as much as it looks gorgeous, I was underwhelmed, I do like the interior, but it is a tad more busy, which I love the A8 interior, its nice than my house. The S5 I was expecting to get into the car knowing once I drove it, my 335i would be outmatched and the lesser of the two, you would think anyway, but as you reported, the torque is nothing special, and the steering was numb. It was odd, I could not put my finger on why the car drove more like a sedan, than the coupe sportiness it looks possess. I was really disappointed, I loved the looks of the car, and was hoping to have a new car (Preowned) to lust after for a year, instead, I bought the 335i with 50K miles on it after 1 test drive, the car was a blast, its was tight, and it was good at everything I asked it to do, pure sports coupe. Since I now have had the preowned 335i for a year this weekend, I see so many nice S5's around my block and at the dealer, and everytime say to myself, too bad that car is not fast and more tuned. I can see people going from a 3 to a 5 for a host of reasons, mainly a fresher and more contemporary body and interior, and more power to them, but below the surface, its just falls a tad short, not much, but its missing some ummph. Its also a LOT of $$$ for a S5, and the A5 power is just getting by. Thought I have been keeping an eye on resale, and they do hold their value well, and hard to to come by as well in Chicago until this month a few are off lease now. I am not knocking the A5/S5 in any way, a great car thats well executed and a great package, but the 335i has me spoiled, and firmly satisfied with my decision, but the A5, is damn gorgeous to me, a winner in the looks department. |

I share the same sentiments; the A/S 5 has in my opinion an absolutely stunning exterior and interior design (though I do agree there are too many buttons), but it's driving experience just left me underwhelmed.
From the feel of the steering wheel itself to the feel delivered through the column, it does not deliver a compelling experience. Again, those are just my opinions and I am not trying to slam the Audi because they deserve a lot of credit for fielding an absolutely gorgeous fleet of designs across their lineup.

As expensive as BMW's are these days, Audis are even more overpriced. Especially the S5. It's priced damn near the new M3's and can't even match the performance of 335i. But it is a beautiful car however.

this is VERY accurate. I traded my v8 s4 only a month ago for my 335i. the s5 is what 10-15 bhp more than my s4 was. quattro is nice but it sometimes OVERLY tames you. in other words, the RWD 335 is more out of control, thrashable, the Audi is more go pinned down to the pavement, every turn you feel tons of weight shifting like weight for the nose heavy car to get it's weight back on track. the 335 even stock felt quicker than My s4.. now tuned? much faster.. it's waayyy more of a sports car than the s4/s5 ad mentioned above. asthetcally I also like the BMW more sorry. the front end, side profile, rear, I like all of it on the 335i. most cars ice ever owned I didn't like from all angles lol. this one is the first. especially the front end dead on. it's actually what sucked me towards getting a BMW in the first place.... the e90/92 front end .

the a5/s5, definelty wins in the looks department. not saying my 335i isnt sexy but the a5 just looks so rich and the front end just looks like its telling you to get the fck out of my way lol.
but isnt the s5 faster then a 335i stock? the s5 does have a V8 correct?

yeah S5 has much better appearance/presence than 335i E92, save the chrome mirror covers (blah!), but as others have said I'd take an M3 any day over it for basically the same money. I don't have a lot of experience with them, but I personally find their interiors to be a bit "blingy."

All the reasons, plus the lack of any usable rear leg room why I didn't consider the S5.
I like sedans, but ever since I saw the S5's styling I was in love. The audi MMI, steering, and just feeling sluggish lost me. |

I drove the S5 and I loved it! That V8 noise is amazing. I drove a manual trans one. You're right about the kick in the seat power but it still moves. It is fast, it just doesn't feel it. It's very refined. I love the S5

I drove a new S4 about a year ago and I think I wet myself a little during the test drive. The S5 I can't really comment on but I don't care for it's flashiness.

i test drove once the s5 before getting my 335i. It sounds fart every time it changes gear and i like that but the acceleration of it is much slower then what i expected from 4.2L v8 . The interior is way too complicated , loads of buttons and the navi is like driving a plane, fully packed dash. It sounds deep and the exhaust isnt too loud but again, i just wont pay that much for such a slow car, no joke, i would consider S5 as slow. Also i test drove the A5 2.0T and its sluggish, much slower then gti wihich has the same engine. I know its bigger body but i didnt expect that much slower

Sounds like most e92 335i owners feel the same way about the S5. I was thinking about a 2010 CPO S5 (15,000 miles) because it looks so DAMN nice inside and out! If Audi grows some nuts and tunes the S5 to change the throttle response/torque curve, steering, etc. I would buy the S5 in a heartbeat...not that I don't still love my car, but I have owned it for almost 5 years now.

If they had put the supercharged 6 in the S5 instead of the naturally aspirated 8 it would have been an even more difficult decision for me when I was shopping.

i must admit that the S5 sounds great and the sporty look gives me the impression of a fast car especially the v8 badge on each side of fender. But the fact is with the most aggressive mode "i cant remember how its called, maybe sport mode or dynamic mode?" and still doesnt handle really good and fast though
