I know this isn’t rod knock but it has seemed to pop up after doing my engine flush and oil change. Its starting to go away more and more everyday. Only showing up when the car is cold now. I have another oil change, 5w-40 LM ready to go. Just wanted to get some ideas as to what’s going on.

I can't really hear it, you should do a video when after you start then come closer to the Engine bay, cold start ticking can be the Vanos Solenoids.

Does it show any codes? My N63 engine rattled some times w/o error codes. I replaced spark plugs with the one step colder ones, as well as the engine filters and the rattle is now gone.

Here’s the oil after 234 miles with the mos2 additive. I was told the oil is fine like this since there is an additive. Filter had 4 very small small tiny flakes of metal, very thin too. Not too worried about that.

The sound at 7 seconds is what I’m hearing as well. The OP says it was the fuel vent valve? Pretty interesting such a thing can make a sound like this.

cold start sound

Update!

The bottom mounting bolts for the alternator were fucked up. The bottom left is completely missing and the bottom right was backed out. I’m going to get four new bolts and swap them out. The alternator was replaced at some point because this unit is a denso and not Bosch.

Vacuum pump. Reasonably common on the N55. Mine has been doing it for at least 9 years with no worsening or other effects on performance or longevity. When you hear that little clinking, pull your oil filler cap and be prepared to be panicked if you didn't know what it is (like me the first time).

A while ago I had that knock noise on cold start, but I cleaned my solenoids and it hasn’t came back since. The first time it happened I almost passed out lol 😂

What im hearing in your video is the same I hear from my 535 also. Im fairly convinced mine is transmission. No issues what so ever but a pretty clear Rattle type sound from back of motor, trans area.

Interesting. I wonder if it’s a fluid issue or something.
