should new car warranty start from purchase date?

I bought my MY2007 225i on Feb 29, 2008, and I believed that the warranty should begin on that date and end 4 years/50k later.

I recently had my car serviced and I noticed on the report that it said my car had an original in-service date of Apr. 30, 2007, and the warranty ends in Apr 30, 2011.

I contacted the original dealer and they told me the manager had taken the car out of inventory, and the warranty began on that day. I'm not sure what that meant, so I called BMWNA and they said that the new car warranty began when the car was put out on the lot for sale. Can this be correct?

I am now left with almost 1 year less warranty than I thought I had. The car only had 75 miles when I purchased it. Am I right to think that the warranty should start from the date I purchased the car? I even used the trunk money available for any e92/93 that were in dealer inventory at the time...

Ask the dealership to provide an additional year's warranty. I'd be real mad to learn about something like this after I bought the car.

How many miles were on it when you bought it? Sounds like you might be in an undisclosed former-courtesy-car situation.

The warranty does indeed begin on the in-service date (it should say in your manual) but it sounds like BMW considered the car to be in service long before you bought it.

Our E46 was a 10-month-old courtesy car, so I have some experience in the weird limbo of new/used this situation presents. Since courtesy cars are owned by the dealership and not registered, the state and insurance considered it a new car regardless of it's 7.5k-ish miles. BMW considered the warranty starting when the car was put into service, but the dealership tacked on an extra warranty year and mileage.

Even though BMW didn't consider it a "new" car for warranty purposes, they still sent all the new-car stuff like the magazine and CDs and miscellaneous trinkets since we were the first owners.

Thanks for the replies so far. Like I said, the car only had 75 miles on it, sitting on the showroom floor, with its new car sticker in the window. I would never have thought to ask "by the way, has the warranty started on that thing?" I will know to ask that from now on though. The dealer never mentioned anything to me about the warranty. I assumed myself to be purchasing a brand new car.

I have not contacted the dealer yet after asking about the warranty information. All the dealer did was confirm that the in-service date was correct, and that they lowered the price of the car accordingly. Thats funny, I thought I was getting a deal because they couldn't sell the MY2007 through the whole year of 2007!

Was the dealer in the wrong for not telling me about the warranty? Is there some action I can take to get the in-service date changed to my purchase date, or to get an extended warranty for free?

Also, with the BMW information sent to me, there was a card which stated my original in-service date was 2/29/2008. However when I called BMWNA, they said that date on the card was submitted by the dealership, and that their computers showed an in-service date of 4/30/2007.

It sounds like the dealership pulled a fast one on you. I would have expected a warranty extension from the dealership... but then again, I also would have expected them to disclose the whole deal upfront.

I don't think BMW is likely to do anything about it. You might be able to get a lawyer to write a nastygram to the dealership for failing to disclose the warranty issues up-front.

If you go through your purchase paperwork, you might find that this was mentioned on one of the pages you signed, though. It'd be worth a check before you think about making a stink.

Should be from the point it was registered...or whatever they are calling it. EVERY car I've bought has the warranty from my date of purchase and the miles over what was on the car. If I bought it with 100...it goes to 50,100.
