Someone bumped my new car
So, i was in hollywood doing some shopping and some hipster from NYC hit my car going some where between 2-7mph. Now im familiar with taps that occasionally happen, but this felt a bit more jarring than a love tap. I got out and confirmed my car had minor indentations in the paint and very minor scratching where the nails on his license plate pushed into my bumper... my question is: Is this car (with parking sensors) going to be ok with just ignoring it? I'm sure i can just get his insurance to paint a new bumper but im worried about structural long term integrity and of course my new car now has a blemished ass. I filed an insurance claim as a formality. What did you guys do when/if this happened to you?

I would file the insurance claim and get it repaired, even if minor damage. You are faultless so you should not have to suffer from any marks on your car.
I wouldn't worry about the structural integrity of your car, though, as it sounds like it was a pretty soft tap.

I would give him a piss-poor review in his last supporting role at the local Whataburger.
Regardless, you pay dearly for insurance.. Go get after it.. |

i think it is worth getting checked out. it could be nothing or it could be worse than expected too. but unless you have a professional check it ou i would consider it suspect. I also would have them check out your seat belts. They could also be damaged in an impact too. the racheting mechanism can sustain damage in even minor accidents if the right circumstances arise. Not many people know to have them changed after accidents. Note though that Insurance companies may not pay for this procedure but when you follow up with ok that is fine if you want but if my famliy gets injured then we will revisit this conversation wth an attorney. They usually change their minds.

File for insurance, it's on him anyways so it's his (or his insurance) responsibility to restore it back to it's pre-accident state. You'll have to deal with the insurance to get your fair share (without being dishonest, which just jacks the rate up for all of us).
Structurally, you should be fine. I haven't looked at BMW's but typically there is a foam crush cell right behind the actual reinforcement bar. That takes majority of the low-speed impact; the rebar shouldn't deform at all until the impact becomes more severe. Only way to know is to take it to a shop to find out (or peek under yourself), but I highly doubt there is structural damage. |

Bumper covers are flexible rubber so you can't tell all the damage just by looking at it. My wife was 'tapped' in the rear, looked very minor, and ended up having a support bracket severely bent and needing replacement along with cover repaint and foam cushioning replacement.

When this happened to me, it was the trailer hitch on a Sequioa and it made a permanent indentation in my front bumper. I got the bumper replaced at their cost - they paid rather than file a claim.
