Did I go too far?

Hey guys, if anyone out there has ever had a low baller come to give you a ridiculous number on a car you are selling, what has been your response to them? Do you just let them off for being D-bags? See my response below to a guy and let me know if I went too far:

I'm not sure how to respond to you, so let me break it down for you
1. You aren't a serious buyer because you didn't ask anything about the car or want to see it.
2. You didn't ask about the vehicle maintenance or history.
3. You didn't ask if the title was clean or if there were any accidents.
4. You work at XXXXXXXXX which makes me think you don't have enough income to afford the car unless its ridiculously below market value.
Am I right? If this offends you, then that makes 2 of us that are now offended.
Conclusion: The price is the price. You take it or take a walk. And frankly, the way this started, I don't want to sell it to you at any price.

Does anyone think I went too far? Normally, my instinct would be a 4 letter invitation for them copulate with themselves. Maybe my wife's right, I am a dick. c'est la vie.

You posted something for sale, it's going to happen man. I've sold my fair share of stuff online and if you have as well, it's just part of doing business online. Not everybody is respectful, and not everybody has a sense of how to conduct business.

It's almost like posting something on the forum and being upset if every single person who replies doesn't agree with you. For me I always give them a respectful reply letting them know that the car/item for sale is worth $X, and that's what you'd like for it. If everybody replies like that it might help the other person understand the true value (more than likely not though). Or if you're really upset, go fill out a gym inquiry with their phone number to all of their local gyms. And their phone will start BLOWING up.

I would just ignore low ballers instead of giving them a lecture on how a serious buyer should be.

I learned that the best thing to do to lowballers is to just simply ignore them. If you priced it right, then a decent offer will come shortly.

If it's an unrealistic offer chances are that it's someone (a kid) doing it for their own amusement, to entertain their fantasies about owning that vehicle in the off-chance that they get a joyride or have something to brag about to their friends.

Nothing good will come from trying to set them in their place. I'd ignore, but if the offer was just flat out offensive I might troll back.

Why would someone tell you where they work? Or is that their reasoning for a lowball offer? :

This is rude and completely unnecessary in my opinion. You're making an assumption about someone's socioeconomic status based off of some arm-chair research you are doing.

Just ask them to make you a serious offer or flat out ignore them.

Anything lower than 10% of my asking price I don't even reply to.

I calibrate from there based on how close they are to what I'm asking for the car/part/whatever.

YMMV

Number 4 was pretty uncalled for and snobby to be honest.

Just ignore lowballers.

I find and use humour as a way to cut through the BS and not get emotionally hooked by somebody who might just be trolling and not have any real serious intentions to buy the car. It works most of the time and the times that it doesn't work that's ok too. Another great tactic is to ask them if they would sell the car at that price if it were theirs... Most will smile and then we can begin serious negotiations. Sometimes I'll tell them that's a great technique to attempt to steal the car and I'll keep that offer in mind...
Whatever technique you finally decide to choose the most important thing to remember is not to allow it to get under your skin because then you lose and the other person wins; it's crucial to just allow it to roll off like water on a ducks back

Thanks guys. I appreciated all the comments. I'm going to try to stick to "no thanks," and see if that works out. I know there are bigger and more important things in life than just cars. But I think for most of us, it's a passion, so I hope you guys can relate. Enjoy the holidays guys!

I enjoy low ball offers. Makes me laugh, enjoy it because you have something they don't simply no thanks will be perfect in most cases.

Geez, was comment #4 necessary? A simple 'no thanks' would do.

Since several of you have mention it, I'm going to explain #4. It was not I who brought up the guy's work or income. The other guy threw that out there and that is the only way I know where he worked. I don't go around asking guys where they work. Just FYI.

I think in most stupid lowball offers if you said OK, they would choke and then give you some BS story...because they can't pay even the lowball price!
