Road trip up I-95(DC to NYC/CT)

looking for some advice......

planning on taking the M on a road trip for the 4th of July weekend

We plan to leave DC on Thursday and drive up to Stamford, CT.

What are traffic patterns going to be like the day before a major holiday?

If we leave around 2/3 PM, are we going to hit some major traffic around NJ/NY?

Should we just plan on leaving DC around 7 instead?

Thanks!

Stay away from I-95 in CT from Greenwich all the way up to Milford between 8-9AM and 4:30-6:30PM during the week, especially Fridays. On weekends Sunday late afternoon will be an issue going southbound in same area of CT and around New Rochelle and Cross Bronx area of NY.

Stay of I-95 in general you will regret it. Take route 1 if you can or the hutch.

Yea Route 1 is what I take from Greenwich to Stamford if it's after 430. The OP should be good.

Maybe some blue painters tape all over the front end Seriously...I95 has so much fast traffic (I've seen traffic flow at 90mph in SC) in many areas. Add that to lots of truck traffic and debris and it's paint chip central.

This is always a difficult route to drive even without it being a holiday weekend. My personal experience has been to leave late and target arrival in the early morning. You will encounter some late night road work, but typically the slow downs are short stemmed and drama free. I know this isn't ideal for most, but having traveled this route countless times over the years, I find that trying to anticipate high traffic times during the day is just impossible. Safe travels and happy 4th.
