Sunoco or Mobil?
My local Shell station is now charging 40 cents per gallon extra for credit card. My next choices are Sunoco or Mobil. I know Mobil is top tier but Sunoco has a good reputation. Your thoughts?

What's wrong with Chevron? It's the only gas I use cuz it has the best detergent (Techron) in the biz. BMW even sells Techron in their own bottles as a fuel system cleaner.

just try to think of the fact that BMW designed your car to run in Mexico, China, and lots of other places where gas is way shittier than we have. In my 25 years of car ownership, I have never had a failure due to gas. Just buy from a reputable company.
here are all the 'Top Tier' brands: 76 Stations Aloha Petroleum Chevron Conoco CountryMark Entec Stations Exxon Hawaii Fueling Network (HFN) Holiday Stationstores, Inc. Kwik Trip / Kwik Star MFA Oil Co. Mileage Stations Mobil Ohana Fuels Phillips 66 Quik Trip Rebel Oil Road Ranger Severson Oil Shell Texaco Tri-Par Oil Co. U.S. Oil

Use Mobil 93, never had one problem. No HPFP problems either, to include pre-recall. Also, Mobil/Exxon speedpass to solve your CC issue.

We use Sam's Club/Walmart, Arco AM/PM, and a little gas station near work that gets it's gas from Bob's Fuels. Really!

I only use shell v-power and i have crazy pre- ignition (pinging). Mentioned it to the dealer and they said they checked the car out and found nothing and couldn't hear anything. Its so bad that even under light throttle input (slow acceleration on a level road) its very noticeable. I have just learned to live with it but it really bothers me......

It doesn't matter, what matters most are the tanks which are storing the fuel, and the pumping mechanisms. If an all-new Qwik-E-Mart went up with 24 new fuel islands, that's the one to get it at imho....
Arm yourself with a permanent 5% gas rewards card. If you don't, and you end up paying cash, to get the 40 cents less per gallon, you're subsidizing someone else's rewards card. The reason for this phenomenon is the interchange fees. You use your rewards card, the merchant is paying for it in the form of a higher interchange fee. That's why some unscrupulous merchants in the NJ/NYC area will run the transaction as convenience store, not gasoline. Even the credit card states not responsible for that. Obviously they are giving you the reward so you'll use their card and not someone else's. |

It doesnt matter. Flame on.
But the reality is that fuel is traded on the open market. The fuel you get at exxon may have been refined by texaco or vice versa. All fuels must have certain types of additives and detergents mandated by the EPA. Many tests have been done and the conclusions are all the same. Fuel is fuel and it is almost all molecularly identical. The only thing I would be a little hesitant about are small no name mom and pop stations. Who knows how long the fuel has been in their tanks, and if their business practices are up to par. But as far as the big boys go . . . buy the cheapest one! If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I too have a choice between Sunoco and mobile gas ... The stations are right beside each other.... Used to use Sunoco until I saw they are not on the top tier gas list... Which I thought was odd since it is nascars gas..... So now I use nothing but mobile 93 and had no issues... Even have a smoother idle.

But you will always have people who follow myths instead of fact. This station is on a brochure that the BMW dealer gave you, so the gas must be better. I always thought it ironic that BP is not top tier, yet they have a relationship with BMW in that their oil is recommended, not Mobil. It's politics and smoke and mirrors! |
