Active Sound Design (ASD) Retrofit progress
Update:
Hi guys Here are some videos of my retrofitted ASD in action. First half of first video, comfort mode, barely noticeable (the way I want it). 2nd half of first video, sport mode, more noticeable. Second video I messed around with F80 M4 settings. Way too aggressive and noticeable, especially on my aftermarket amp & speakers. What also sucks about the M4 setting is that the volume is constant on Eco-Pro,Comfort and Sport. Probably because M4 has different way of adjusting driving modes. Original post: Hi guys I thought I'd post of this thread to share my progress on retrofitting Active Sound Design to my 2013 328i MSport. To start off with I ordered the module. It has various part numbers, but apparently they are all the same: 65129352264*; 65129326555; 65129343317; 65129353021; 65129362445; 65129362445; 65 12 9 322 712 (03/12 -> ); 65 12 9 302 536 (03/12 -> 07/13).* I could not get a part number for the connector so I will be making up my own. Next up I got the pin assignments from ISTA Rheingold: Here is the inside of the connector: I then transposed all the pin assignments onto an image to make my life easier: I then continued to only connect power and the CAN signal. ISTA detects the new module ISTA before: ISTA after: E-SYS detects the new module: After this I flashed the ASD module. I used a modified FA where I changed the production code typekey to 3C17 to ensure it is a production code that included ASD. Here is the FDL edit view afterward: Next thing I must connect the feed from NBT head unit and output to the AMP. I first need to spend some time to make proper connectors so will update all you guys once I progress further. Very excited to see this retrofit work! Not really. It is about the car making the 'right' kind of noise. Back in the day they would work intake/exhaust, now they just play recorded sound through the car speakers. This is becoming commonplace even in 'high end' vehicles such as the M cars.

If the actual sound sucks, but the ASD component is faithfully recreating the actual engine sound based on engine parameters...I don't follow you....

I paid R3000 (Around $290) for the part, new from dealership. Then paid R100 ($10) from a scapyard for the connector. It's nearly impossible to get a ASD connector. In the end I got a HiFi amp connector (From E92, even amp connector from E46 will work). You just have to trim off some of the guides on the outside of the connector.

Just a quick update. The module is connected and it is working. I must say it is quite a bit lounder than I expected. Might be because I am running aftermarket amp & speakers. Will first try and change selected engine and turning amp gain down a bit to balance it out.
All in all, this mod was a lot easier than I anticipated. |

I had been reading about how other car makers like Ford (with the Mustang) solved this problem, and while I didn't get into the specifics, they basically funnel noise into the car past the sound barriers vs using the BMW strategy of simulating the noise.
