Badge placement

I am trying to put some matte badges I bought from Bimmian on my car but the previous owner has debadged the car. I have looked for any indications from residue from the adhesive to paint fading... nada.

Is there any source/template/cutout that I can use to assist me in the placement and spacing of the badges on my car? I have swapped badges for matte versions in the past but I always was able to tape it off first so the transfer was in the identical position..

I'm at a loss here, short of going to the local BMW dealership and making a template to use.

If no one else chimes in, I can post up the measurements from the edges of the trunk lid & between the letters for the badge.

I have 328ix - don't think they would be any different as it only says '328i' on PS

OK, I whipped up this diagram real quik like (obviously it is Not To Scale)...

  • Lettering is 7/8" (22mm) up from bottom edge of trunk lid all along
  • Spacing between the numbers is 1/4" (6.4mm)
  • Spacing between numbers and letter (if any) is 7/16" (11mm)

>> 1st draw a reference line parallel to the trunk edge and 7/8" (22mm) up like my phantom line shown

>> If you were to lay a ruler on that line, align the 2" (51mm) mark with intersection of that line and trunk edge - the bottom of the badge letter would start there.

>> You could then work backwards using the spacing between letters/numbers as shown (the 7-7/8" (200mm) dimension is really a reference dim, as that is where my particular lettering ended up - depending on your lettering this distance may be different)

The 7-3/4" (197mm) dimension from the centerline of the trunk roundel to the begining forward edge of the '3' is also a reference dim - but you can use these reference dims as a roundabout for your install

Hope this helps ya out

I don't think anyone is going to notice if your badge isnt in the original place...

But I'm very anal when it comes to this type of thing, it will always be in the back of my mind that my badge is not the same ahaha..so I know how you feel...

good luck with it....although I do think de-badged looks pretty good too

dude, what an awesome diagram! This should be a sticky, as I eyeballed mine and it turned out to be lower than it should [although I doubt anyone else notices...]

No problem!

I'm a Mechanical Design Engineer - sit a computer and design our oem reactors, carb furnaces, & support equipment using SolidWorks all day long.

I just drew this up real quik using my Design Tablet - where I can draw by hand with a stylus on the screen freehand, then dimensioned, saved as a JPG, downloaded to PhotoBucket & voila - here it is

The spacing and position of the badge on a BMW is supposed to be in millimeters. People will notice if you attach your badge with inch-based spacing

You can use the same principles for the 335i. My car is a 335i.

Whether the measurements are taken in mm or inches, the distances are identical. Take your inch measurements and covert them in mm. Problem solved.

I used this scale for my badge placement and its perfect.
